Deirdre Dougherty never cursed at anyone, much less put a curse on the potato crop of her remote Irish village. She’d rather take her chances with the Atlantic lapping at the bottom of the cliff than the mob intent on burning her as they have her cottage. Deirdre leaps…and plops down over 160 years later in a Texas lake. She doesn’t understand how she’s ended up with the man from her recent visions or why he has the same name as the saint to whom she prayed. She’s in danger of falling for the handsome policeman who rescued her, in spite of the fact that he thinks she’s lying to him. How can she convince him her story  is true when she’s finding it difficult to believe the tale herself?

Police Detective Brendan Hunter wants answers. Who shot him and his partner?. Why?. And why does Deirdre know details of the event?. Her story has to be a colossal fabrication or else she’s a beautiful psycho. Either way, he wants her gone before he becomes even more fascinated with her. But he can’t let her out of sight until she confesses to how she learned details no one but he and his partner knew.

My review

It is my very first time reading about a book on time travel and I should say, I am quite intrigued by it!. Caroline makes sure that Deirdre, the protagonist, takes her own sweet time to adjust to her new environment after she travels through a time portal of over 160 years!. I couldn’t help but laugh when Deirdre thought the people in the television were leprechauns :P. She is a quick learner though and learns about modern facilities very fast.

The cottage, the lake, the sunset, everything is beautifully described. Caroline uses simple words to write and makes sure Deirdre uses words that are obsolete as of now, as she is from the period of 1845!. I love small details like that which give originality to the plot. The book does have many deaths/killings in it but it’s not the kind that makes the book dismal.

The story has a nice flow to it and it was very pleasant to read. Deirdre is a very likeable character because she is so helpful, caring and very naive. In this book, Caroline shows what money can do. Both the good and bad of it. Brendan, the hero, is such a kind and compassionate man. He has a heart of gold. But very untrusting. Well I would be untrusting too if a woman claimed that she actually traveled through time and fell out of the blue into a lake, near my boat!!. The title of the book is very apt indeed.

The romance between Brendan and Deirdre is very sweet and portrayed in an innocent manner. The suspense in this book is ok. I wouldn’t say it’s awesome. The question in this book is not “Who did it?”. It’s more like “Why he did it?”. Reading a lot of suspense thrillers (that being my fav genre), I have developed a sense of finding out who the bad guy is and I did have my doubts. So I just waited till the end to see *why* the bad guy did, whatever that he did. No spoilers here!

The book cover is pretty dull with just a cliff and the main characters. The cliff is of a lot of importance in the story but well when you look at the book, you would simply judge by it’s looks yeah?. But the author too realized that the cover is uninviting and it has since been replaced by this new cover.

I highly suggest this book to everyone. You will really like it. Also the quality of the pages is very nice. Each page is really thick and at times, I felt like I have flipped over 2 pages when it was only just one. There are 260 pages and the story is interesting enough that I finished it in 2 days. I give this book 4/5 which by Goodreads standards means I “really liked” it!

How I received my copy!

I won a print copy of Out of the Blue from a book giveaway that Caroline held over at her blog. I am SUPER EXCITED to have one more print book to add to my book collection. I definitely love print books more than ebooks. This is the first time I am getting a book by snail mail and it was so nice. The author did not request this review but reviews always are welcome, aren’t they?.

Love,
Naz 🙂

  3. When I first saw the cover, I was all like “soo… I’m guessing this is a romance story that takes place on a cliff?”
But looks like I was wrong. This book has so much more going on, judging by your review. And yes, the new cover is so, so much better.
