Five Ways to Combat Slow Metabolism!

You’ve likely heard all types of health banter around metabolism, “Oh she is so fit, her metabolism must be really high,” or “Watch out, your metabolism slows down as you age.” There are many misconceptions about metabolism, what exactly it is and what it means for your weight and health. Clearing up the confusion can put you on the right track to recognizing and tackling a slow metabolism the right way.

What is Metabolism?

When you eat and drink, your body breaks down what you consume, delivering minerals, vitamins, and nutrients to vital organs, and converting calories into energy. That process of converting what you consume into energy is called metabolism. Powered by hormones produced by your thyroid and adrenal glands, the metabolic process that takes place in your body can be affected by everything from your lifestyle and diet to genetics, age, gender, underlying medical issues, and your environment.

How Can I Tell If My Metabolism Is Slowing Down?

Many people are quick to blame a “slow metabolism” for their weight gain, but it is not common for metabolism alone to pack on the pounds. Diet and exercise are still the key factors to healthy weight management when other underlying medical issues are not present.

Exercise

When you intake the same amount of food regularly, but your metabolism slows down, your body is slower to convert calories into energy. This means less nutrients are reaching your blood system and therefore your organs, muscles, and brain, and more fat is being stored. Slow metabolism symptoms include chronic fatigue, sugar cravings, hair loss, headaches and trouble concentrating, dry or cracked skin, often feeling cold even in warm temperatures, difficulty losing weight, and general muscle weakness.

Recognizing a comprehensive presence of multiple symptoms definitely warrants a trip to the doctor to have a conversation about what you are experiencing and whether testing should be done to check your thyroid and adrenal glands.

How Can I Boost My Metabolism?

The good news? Activity, diet, and smart thinking can naturally help boost your metabolism and your overall health.

● Contrary to presumption, eating regular meals or smaller meals throughout the day can boost your metabolism. If you significantly cut your diet and go without eating for extended periods of time, your body will naturally slow the metabolic processes because it is aiming to conserve as much energy as possible.

● Getting enough sleep and staying hydrated are also important factors in boosting metabolism, helping you stay alert, active, and warm which cues your body’s metabolic process to keep burning calories.

● Ditch processed foods and meals with high sugar content (women should aim for eating around 24g of sugar per day) – they disrupt your body’s natural blood sugar regulation and slow down metabolic functioning.

● Get out and exercise! Incorporate light weight lifting into your cardio workout – muscle burns calories faster than fat, and regular exercise gets your body into a new routine of expending energy and building muscle.

● Limit caffeine and alcohol intake as both can affect your appetite, sleep, and calorie to energy conversion.

Convinced your metabolism is slowing down? Taking small, manageable steps to whip it back into shape starts with you. Start a new tradition of eating a protein-rich breakfast each morning, taking a brisk 20 minute walk every day, and working on getting to bed a littler earlier each night. Small changes can make a big difference, naturally!.

The Top 5 Anti-aging Beauty Trends in 2017!

Aging can start as early as your late 20s. Notice how beauty companies are marketing anti-aging products for women in their 20s and mid-30s. Gone were the days when anti-aging products were only for women 40 and beyond. The late 20s and mid-30s are described by dermatologists as the pre-aging stage, when the lines around the eyes and mouth may start to show.

Whether you just approached the pre-aging stage or are already in your golden years, worry no more because this year is a year for exciting innovations. The top anti-aging products of 2017 contain smart ingredients. Some of them are unexpectedly on the list. Who would have thought that probiotics would be the next big thing in skincare? To further give you more ideas about looking fresh and young, here are products and procedures to keep on your radar this year.

1) Topical and ingestible probiotics

Recent studies suggest that good bacteria, such as lactobacillus and bifidobacterium are beneficial for the skin. These probiotic bacteria have tons of benefits and one of them is supercharging our gut health. It’s all about taking care of the body from the inside out to reveal a young-looking skin on the outside. We ingest probiotics through food and supplements. Some good sources of probiotics are kefir, dark chocolate, and miso soup. On the other hand, topical probiotics are known to be an effective treatment against many skin conditions like eczema and acne.

2) Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a carbohydrate that naturally occurs in the human body. However, our body decreases its ability to produce hyaluronic acid as we age. This is why synthetic versions gained much popularity in the previous years. They will continue to emerge this year because of their ability to boost skin elasticity. This gel-like molecule that is often used on moisturizers hydrates the skin by drawing in moisture from the surrounding environment. It usually works on all skin types but dermatologists highly recommend them for patients with dry and acne-prone skin.

3) Soft and gentle cleansers

Scrubs and cleansers with harsh ingredients will take a backseat this time around. Instead, ultra gentle cleansers that promise not to strip the skin while removing impurities will take the lead. These soft cleansers use natural exfoliants that are effective in terms of clarifying the skin’s surface.

4) Mesotherapy

The Euphoria Cosmedic Clinic Gold Coast is one of the well-known clinics in Australia that offers this procedure. This technique is known to reduce wrinkles, tighten skin, enhance collagen, and hydrate the skin — all that you need to achieve naturally-looking young skin. In general, you will be required to undergo at least five sessions to get effective results.

5) Non-chemical sunscreen

The best sunscreens of 2017 do not contain any of the scary ingredients such as oxybenzone and octinoxate. These ingredients are known for their bad reputation. For instance, oxybenzone can cause allergic reactions when absorbed by the skin. It’s highly suggested that you opt for physical sunscreens that only contain natural minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

As you might have noticed, the year 2017 is a year of the P’s: protection and prevention. Protection involves the use of the most underrated skincare product, the sunscreen. For some, it could also mean undergoing treatments to achieve the best results. On the other hand, prevention is all about cleansing the skin in the gentlest way possible as well as keeping it healthy from the inside.

iHerb Haul #11 – Skincare, hair care products & more!

Hey guys,

Here is yet another iHerb haul. This one is actually from Sep 2016, but I took time to try out everything to give a thorough review for you guys.

This haul focuses on skincare, health and haircare products.

iHerb haul

The Toner by Jeffrey James Botanicals – I decided to try this brand because it has so many rave reviews. I have used a DIY ACV toner for a really long time & pretty much don’t experiment with toners. But decided to give this one a try.

The Toner

It contains Vitamin C, Colloidal Silver & Camu Camu berry. It helps the skin fight against free radicals, restores balance to the skin, is antioxidant rich & firms and brightens.

It has a really lovely, refreshing scent of roses. It can be used in two ways –

○ as a toner – just spray 2 to 3 pumps onto a cotton pad and wipe away the day’s impurities from your skin. No need to wash it off.

○ as a mist – just spritz it directly onto your face and neck for a refreshing feeling. Leave it as it is, without wiping off.

It comes in a spray bottle. I definitely recommend it.

Price : $16.80 (Approx AED 61.70) for a 118 ml glass bottle. Currently though, at the time of writing this post, this product’s price has been increased to $19.20 (Approx AED 70.52), which is still 20% lower than how much you get it for, normally.

The Serum by Jeffrey James Botanicals – This is a deeply hydrating serum with over 50% Hyaluronic acid in it. It’s definitely a great serum and does what it says. It also contains Vitamin C & Green Tea.

The Serum

It has a slightly runny consistency, perfect for a smooth application. It is transparent and comes in a bottle fitted with a nozzle, which is very convenient.

Price : $30.80 (Approx AED 113.13) for a 59 ml glass bottle. However, it’s current price is $35.20 (Approx AED 129.29) & still, 20% lower than it’s regular price.

While Jeffrey James brand is definitely on the higher price range, it is of high quality and not just that, it is also crueltyfree, paraben free, sulphate free & gluten free. Both products mentioned above are good for all skin types.

Bee Propolis Trio supplement by NaturaNectar – This is a supplement that gives overall health, immune support, improves respiratory system and much more. It says ‘Trio’ because it’s a combination of three types of Premium Brazilian Bee Propolis – Brown (85%), Green (10%) & Red (5%).

Bee Propolis

I bought this for my mom and she took 1 capsule per day. She has felt a burst of energy and also her constant cough went down. She recommends it a lot.

Price : $24.74 (Approx AED 90.87) for 60 veggie capsules (2 month supply). But, since it was one of the Brands of the Week, I got a 20% discount and thus paid only $19.79 (Approx AED 72.69) for it.

Andalou Naturals Pumpkin Honey Glycolic Mask – I generally love glycolic masks because they always brighten up the skin by gently dissolving and sweeping away dull, dry surface cells, exfoliating and resurfacing for an even tone, smooth texture, and a luminous complexion.

Glycolic mask

This one in particular, doesn’t disappoint at all. It contains Manuka honey & organic pumpkin. It’s a really lovely mask. It can be applied on dry or damp skin, but I prefer applying on damp skin since it feels less abrasive and more comfortable that way.

Price : $12.71 (Approx AED 46.68) for a 50 gms tub

This mask, just like any other Andalou Naturals products, is vegan, crueltyfree and gluten free.

Boar bristle brush for fine hair by Bass Brushes – This is a much hyped about product. Finally, I decided to try it too when I saw one that is specifically made for my hair type (fine). You have got to experience it!. It’s amazing. Here is a before and after pic :

hair transformation

Definitely not one of my best pics. But, to be honest, I clicked it to show a friend and not for the blog.

It smoothes the hair and gives it a very natural shine. It also works out tangles. The handle is made of pure bamboo. It can be used even on wet hair!. This hair brush is gentle enough to be used as a baby brush too. Such a lovely product and it’s quality is awesome for the price it’s offered at.

Boar bristle brush

Price : $10.20 (Approx AED 37.46). Currently though, it’s price has been reduced to $9.89 (Approx AED 36.33).

Cedarwood essential oil by Now Foods – I bought this because Cedarwood oil helps massively in hair loss. In fact, it’s a product that’s recommended for alopecia patients. It’s my first time trying an essential oil and having heard of how potent it could be, I was sceptical. However, after much researching, I understood that this one can be used neat (directly). So, I have been using 2 – 3 drops directly to spots that needs more hair or by mixing it with hair oils. There is definitely a difference, though it’s not magical.

Cedarwood essential oil

If you are planning to buy this one, I suggest you check out the ‘Atlas Cedarwood oil’ like this one, because apparently that’s the one that’s used more in hair treatments. The one that I bought is extracted from the bark of a Juniper tree and not from a true Cedar it seems!. Bummer. But it does work. Also, since this oil has antiseptic properties, I use couple of drops of it in my foot soak.

Price : $4.57 (Approx AED 16.79) for a 30 ml bottle. Currently, it’s price has been reduced to $4.04 (Approx AED 14.84).

Replenish & Repair oil by The Jane Carter Solution – This hair oil contains Maracuja oil, Coconut oil & Sunflower oil. It is a light yellow colored, lightweight oil, with a subtle, pleasant scent.

Jane Carter hair oil

This is a vegan & crueltyfree haircare brand.

Price : $10.80 (Approx AED 39.67) for a 177 ml bottle.

Hyaluronic Acid serum by Reviva Labs – This is hands down one of the BEST serums out there. I saw a massive change within a couple of uses itself. My skin is plumped, very much more hydrated and supple. Absolutely love it and I can’t recommend it enough!

Hyaluronic acid serum

It’s transparent and has a slightly runny consistency. My skin seems to just drink up this product. In the first pic, you can see that I have bought two bottles. One was for my sil and she has had a very similar experience too.

Reviva Labs serum

It says here, on the bottle, that it contains ‘professional strength’ hyaluronic acid, however, the exact value is not written anywhere. Reviva Labs is a fantastic brand, that’s much raved about. I am glad I tried this product. It’s like a Holy Grail product ♡

It can be used alone for a hydration boost or under a cream. I use it at night, below my skincare oil and follow it up with my night cream. It comes in a glass bottle, with a pump.

Price : $14.31 (Approx AED 52.56) for a bottle containing 29.5 ml. Since I bought two, I got a 5% ‘Quantity discount’. Thus my total was $27.19 (Approx AED 99.87). Currently though, this product’s price has been reduced to $11.37 (Approx AED 41.76) per bottle.

Lift & Firm cream by Andalou Naturals – This is a repeat purchase for my brother. I think it’s his third tub. He swears by it and says no other cream has worked this well at moisturizing his skin.

Andalou Naturals

Price : $21.21 (Approx AED 77.90) for a 50 ml tub.

Shipment & Loyalty credit

Shipment was via DHL & it cost $8.86 (Approx AED 32.54) this time. It was shipped the very next day from US and reached me in UAE in 3 days. Love their fast shipping.

iHerb was giving back a loyalty credit of 10% of the bill total, back in 2016 (Currently, it’s 5%). So, I ended up getting $15.41 which could be used towards my next order, if placed within 2 months. Awesome savings!.

iHerb has made many changes to their site in 2017. That’s why they have reduced the prices of over 20000 products and increased the prices of a few products. Also, they have introduced ‘Shipping Savers’, which are products that can be added into your cart to help lower your shipping charges. To check the list of those products, click here.

Let me know if you need product suggestions etc while shopping at iHerb. I love to help out.♡

Guest post : An Essential Oils Guide for Beginners!

Over the years, essential oils have been gaining more and more attention and it’s because of the benefits that it gives. Many people could tell that essential oils make them feel better. They have the ability to relieve several symptoms such as anxiety, stress, headache, and many others. And because of that, a lot of people are considering them as their natural relief for respective symptoms.

What are essential oils?

An essential oil is a natural oil which is a product of the process known as distillation. It is famous for the smell and aroma that it provides and this aroma has a lot to offer—including relief for specific symptoms and conditions. From dietary to cosmetic aspects, an essential oil offers a variety of benefits.

How is it produced?

Basically, an essential is extracted not only through distillation but as well as cold pressing and rein tapping. How to Use Essential Oils There are a lot of ways to make use of essential oils and these include the following:

1. Aromatic

Essential oils are powerful that even if you just sniff them, you will experience physiologic, emotional, and psychological responses. It’s because they are quickly absorbed by the smell receptors which are directly connected to the limbic system. As you may know, the limbic system is crucial to supporting various functions of the body such as smelling, feeling different emotions, behaving, and thinking. Because of this, it is no surprise how essential oils can do wonders to the body’s system.

Essential oils simply uplift you and if you feel somewhat stressed-out over the daily hassles and pressures in life, just the smell of their aroma can make a difference. Other effects of essential oils include calming sensation.

If you are using essential oils aromatically, you do not need diffuser devices. All you need to do is to pour a few drops of essential oil in the palm of your hand, cup it around your nose, breathe deeply, and enjoy its relaxing scent.

You can also perform a different method. Example, you can apply an oil to a cotton ball and place in the air vents of your car. You can also combine your oils and place the combination in a spray bottle with water, then mist it on your carpet, furniture, or bedsheets. Or, you can also add an oil if you are washing your sheets. Other people use an essential oil in household surface cleaners, too.

2. Topical

Topical application, otherwise known as skin application, is one of the effective methods when using essential oils. It’s because they have low molecular weights and they easily come through the skin. When the essential oils are absorbed, they remain in the applied area where they provide therapeutic and medicinal benefits.

One of the efficient ways to easily absorb the essential oils to the skin is to perform a light massage to the area. This will increase the blood flow, therefore, the distribution throughout the body is well-improved. The absorption is also much better if you opt for a carrier oil, especially when the skin it’s being applied to is dry or flaky.

To avoid skin sensitivity, you should use a carrier oil like Fractionated Coconut Oil. This kind of oil dilutes more potent oils. Recommended dilution ratio should be one drop of essential oil to at least three drops of carrier oil.

Parts of the body where you can apply essential oils are arms, legs, the bottom of the feet, chest, abdomen, neck, forehead, and temples.

3. Internal

Essential oils can also be used internally as they are also considered as best dietary supplements. An example of this is using a sprinkle of cinnamon on your oatmeal. You will see how tasteful it is when there’s cinnamon. Another example is sipping a mug of peppermint tea or adding fresh basil leaves to your pasta. See, there are a lot of uses of essential oils and all you need to do is to just discover them.

Adding essential oils to your diet gives you a lot of health benefits. Not only that. It also adds flavouring and aroma to the food. And when they are in their concentrated forms, they can also be used as supplements to relieve specific symptoms. Rest assured that they are safe and very effective to use.

Benefits of Essential Oils

Some of the benefits of essential oils include relief of the following symptoms: · Asthma · Acne · Colds · Dry skin · Flu · Flatulence · Loss of appetite · Anxiety · Fatigue · Gout · Stress · Stretch marks · Scars · Depression · Emotional imbalance · Allergies · Arthritis · Insomnia

Conclusion

Now that you learn about the wonders and benefits of essential oils, you might be thinking about buying ones for yourself. Essential oils can be bought online or you can also visit your favourite stores near you.

My experience with Baobab powder

This fine, cream colored, raw fruit powder is a treat to the taste buds. It has a tart, citrusy taste. It has a full bodied, complex flavor that leaves you with a filling sensation. I first tried the powder on it’s own to understand it’s taste.

Baobab powder

Then, I tried it as a drink. When mixing with water, add a little water to the powder to create a paste, then gradually add more water while stirring. It’s a lovely drink with a citrusy taste. I tried with 2 tsps in a glass of water as suggested on the pack that the powder came in. But had to increase the number of tsps to get the right taste.

Miraculous Belly Fat Cutter Detox drink – My results!

Hey guys,

This is totally insane and miraculous!. I saw a forward msg on Whatsapp about a detox drink and decided to try it out. I seriously can’t believe there is such a drastic change. Btw, a huge thanks to Nisa Homey, the one who created this video. Please watch video below :

So, the miraculous drink contains only 3 ingredients and only needs to be taken for a week.

To make a glass of it, you need :
● Handful of Moringa leaves
● Juice of 1/2 a lemon &
● Honey

Just blend together with a glass of water and drink, without even the need of straining.

My results

The drink is refreshing and just the slightest bit bitter because of the Moringa leaves. I have noticed that if you use light green leaves (the younger ones), its an enjoyable drink, but if you use more ripe, dark green leaves, the bitter taste will be there.

The first couple of days, immediately after having the drink, I was burping almost nonstop. I didn’t know I was that bloated!. This didn’t happen much in my mom’s case but my aunt had the exact experience as myself.

Next, I continued having the exact same kind of food I usually have. So basically, I wasn’t dieting or exercising. BUT, my appetite went really low and my cravings for junk food is next to non existent now!. I also no longer snack on chips and chocolate.

If you know me, you will know that I am a foodie. Pizza, burger, pasta, KFC are what dominates both my waking and sleeping state (I dream about food). That’s the extend of my cravings. That’s how it’s been for the past 14 years. But now, everything has changed in just one week.. It’s as if the unimaginable has happened.

Here is a pic of Kerala’s beloved Steamed rice cake (a.k.a Putt):

Putt

Image from Google

It comprises of a cylinder of a mix of rice flour, coconut, salt and water, that’s steamed. One cylinder usually comprises of three pieces. I used to eat one such cylinder for breakfast!. However, now I eat only one piece. Not that I am purposely eating that much, but I am able to eat only that much and I feel full.

Next point to note is my weight. Though I feel much lighter, as if I have shed a lot of kgs, I’ve shed only 1.5 kgs. However, the major difference is my waistline. I have lost about 2 inches of fat from my waist, thus giving me a slimmer look.. I suddenly am fitting into clothes that I had stored away for the day when I will fit into them!. My stomach feels like it’s pulled inwards. I even got the confidence to wear saree after more than an year, after doing this.

saree

Lastly, my energy levels are really high. Loving this burst of energy ♡

This is a fantastic start to get into shape and I urge you to try it. Also, if you are planning to lose weight fast for an upcoming occasion, look no further, this is your solution.

Anything taken in excess is considered bad and same goes for this drink. Don’t get overzealous & drink it everyday. After a week, definitely take a break. I am planning to do this once a month, to continue reaping the benefits.

I checked out Nisa Homey’s YT channels (she has two) and I have now subscribed to both since her videos are all about healthy food and skinny recipes. She has done more detox drinks that I can’t wait to try. Huge thanks to her!

Btw, Moringa leaves are easily available in India. However, for those of you who don’t have access to it, do not fret. Just use 1 tsp of organic Moringa leaf powder along with the other 2 ingredients, to prepare a glass of this drink.

Definitely try it out and share your experience with me..

My New Year Resolutions for 2017!

Hello ♥

Happy new year to all of you & here is wishing you all a wonderful, fulfilling, prosperous & healthy 2017!

happy new year image

I thought I’ll share my resolutions for the upcoming year with you all. True that at times I think resolutions are perfect to be followed in January & then conveniently dumped from February on!. Lol. But, a girl can hope yeah?. Here are my 6 goals :

Lose weight – Probably on everyone’s list & the top one too.. I am currently 77 kgs. By the end of 2017, I hope to reach 65 kgs. Back in 2014, the doc informed me that I can’t conceive unless I lose weight and in a period of 1.5 years I reduced my weight from 83 kgs to 68 kgs. Here is my transformation pic even though the last pic is when I was 72 kgs. I went on to lose 4 more kgs but didn’t click a pic. So yeah, if I put my mind to it, I know I can do it.

Weightloss transformation

Btw if you are wondering how I lost weight, it’s by :

¤ cutting out rice almost completely
¤ cutting out junk food especially burgers, pasta & pizza (my absolute fav stuff) &
¤ going for a walk for about an hour a day

Side note – My fav shopping site, iHerb has a ‘New Year New You’ special deal happening, for a limited time. It offers extremely low prices on Sports, Fitness, Weightloss & Athletic products. They ship worldwide from US.

new year goals

Drink more water – I drink only about a couple of glasses a day right now!. It is soo less. I wish to start with 2 litres a day and then increase it to 3 litres. Water helps flush out toxins & brings in overall wellness. I am so lazy when it comes to reaching for that cup of water. I hope to beat it, this year.

Drink water

Image from Memecenter

Blog more – Being a mom is more tough than I ever imagined. I literally have no time or I am failing fantastically in time management. I have been slacking so badly in putting up posts. I wish to post consistently from now on.

Take haircare more seriously – I always give massive importance to skincare, but never for haircare. 2017 needs to be different.. I have invested in the below products in hopes of achieving an attractive mane of hair :

Haircare products

¤ Tigi S Factor hair moisture serum – While searching for a good hair serum, I came across this one because of the many rave reviews it has earned. Detailed review later.

¤ Cedarwood essential oil– Known to help in strengthening hair and fighting hair loss. I bought this online and it will be featured in my next iHerb haul.

¤ Bass boar bristle brush – People are raving about these brushes. There must be something special in it then, right?. Wait for my review about it for details 🙂

¤ Dessata detangler brush – My hair gets so tangled, I am not even kidding when I say it resembles a bird’s nest at times. Again, wait for my detailed review coming up soon.

¤ Shampoo & conditioner from Dove’s Oxygen Moisture line – Been loving this recently and I intend to make it a part of my regular haircare routine in 2017. These were sent to me for review but rest of the products mentioned above were purchased on my own.

Enjoy motherhood more – Being a mom to my son, Eshaan, is such a blessing. But being someone who is blatantly frank, I would be lying if I said motherhood has not made me tired, irate and generally mad!. But I need to ‘Keep calm & be a patient mom’. Lol. No doubt about it, he is adorable and so so naughty. He is nearly 14 months old. I love him soo much. Here is his pic, since you guys have never seen him before… God bless him, touchwood..

Be thankful – It’s easy to be hopeless, sad and irate with situations that life throws at you. But I need to be more thankful, appreciate life more and as such, discover more happiness.. I know it will make me a much better version of myself 🙂

Being thankful

Guest post : Aromatherapy & Pain

Pain as a sensation, both internal and external, has intrigued doctors and physicians for as long as people have been offering medical observations. With the explosion of technological equipment in recent decades, researchers are shining a new light on some surprising avenues as evidence is hinted at, through work in cutting edge research, of their potential benefits. One such relatively heretofore unexplored field that offers tantalizing promise is the research being made into the benefits of aromatherapy, or the therapeutic use of essential oils extracted from plants.

Aromatherapy

The Mayo Clinic, a leading organization of over three thousand doctors and medical professionals, while cautioning that research on the effectiveness of aromatherapy is still somewhat in its infancy, nonetheless offers several potential benefits as its guidance on the subject. Given the many, often insidious, stressors posed by the grind of the modern bustle, perhaps it is essential a person afford themselves as many opportunities to achieve their full potential productivity and feeling of wellbeing.

The miracle of modern medicine has instilled in many of us a great faith towards the power of drug treatment. It can be devastating when such options do not quite offer the relief they potentially advertise. Enter the benefits of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy Benefits

The prestigious Mayo Clinic offers several promising potential benefits that aromatherapy can offer. In particular, doctors there point to lavender oil as being especially beneficial in dealing with pain management. Cautioning with the usual tempered nature of medical professionals, the organization does stress that the research pointing to this potential benefits have stemmed from “smaller studies.” However, the promising data seems to indicate that aromatherapy, particularly the essence of lavender, will “reduce pain” in surgical and therapeutic settings. Symptomatic pain is a monster that can rear its many ugly heads in both the body and mind.

For the fatigues of the brain too, though, aromatherapy seems to offer some form of relief. It is reasonable to say that the majority of people, if not themselves suffering from it, have experienced to some degree the awfulness of depression. A sobering statistic concerning depression illustrates just how widespread the condition seems to be. In the United States, it is surprising to see that an estimated 16.1 million people have had “at least one major depressive episode in the past year,” and this number barely hints at the countless, though perhaps more manageable, fits of depressive feeling that can strike a person at times. Thankfully, a salve of some sort does seem to be available in the usage of aromatherapy. Potentially beneficial in combating depression, the Mayo Clinic attests that usage of essential oils may have “improved quality of life, particularly for people with chronic health conditions.” Demonstrable relief seems well worth the small investment in lavender oil.

How Aromatherapy connects

There is an established connection between the sense of smell and the limbic system of the brain, which processes emotions. Extrapolating this, several research points suggest an intriguing connection between aromatherapeutical procedures and the pain processing centers of the brain. Though of course more research is always preferred, and in the case of aromatherapy desired, researchers at the American Academy of Pain Medicine offer with certainty extensive observations concerning the “emotional and financial burden” stemming from the “cost of unrelieved pain,” pegging the condition as a 635 billion dollar burden on public health in the United States.

If new advancements in medical research seem to point to the potential benefit of aromatherapy, it is worthwhile the public be made aware. Physical pain, depression, and the many other worrying conditions out there haunting humankind, are rarely solved by one single solution alone. Aromatherapy may help, and if there is a pressing need to relax coming up, give essence of lavender a try. After all, it may just be the breath of fresh air one needs to feel a new rejuvenation.

Dealing with Colic in Babies!

Hey all,

I wouldn’t categorize my son as colicky buy there are times when no amount of trying, makes him stop crying. This inconsolable crying that is intense and lasts for some time is the condition called Colic. This is a common condition and can start from as early as 2 weeks and last until 6th month. In my son, I noticed this from 3.5 months onwards. He is 5 months old now.

Some symptoms :

● Crying starts just like that without any particular reason
● No amount of trying helps
● Baby passes more gas
● His little tummy seems swollen
● He furrows his brows with the intensity of crying
● He brings up his legs towards his stomach and clenches stomach muscles

There is no particular cure for Colic. Only passing of time and some medicines will help relieve the baby. Here are the medicines that I use for him, so that he feels relieved from the gas build up in his stomach :

Gripe water – This is a very popular product that is given to such babies. I bought one too. It was an over-the-counter purchase and not with a prescription from the doctor. It’s by the brand Woodward’s, which is popular where I live. It’s a gentle antacid and helps to calm down any acid reflux that happens in the baby. It is colorless and has a soothing taste. Price : Rs 40 (Approx AED 2.19) for a 130 ml bottle.

Gripe water

Colicaid Drops – This is made to deal with Infant Colic, Griping Pain & Flatulence. It’s a thick, white product. It contains Dill oil, Fennel oil and Simethicone, which is an active ingredient that helps relieve colic. Price : Rs 66 (Approx AED 3.61) for a 30 ml bottle.

Colicaid

Colicaid EZ– Produced by the same company that produces Colicaid Drops, this one is slightly different. The ‘EZ’ in the name stands for Enzyme. This works better than the previous one. It contains Diastase, Pepsin and Simethicone. It’s made to relieve Indigestion, Flatulence & Infant Colic. It’s brown in color, thick in consistency and has a very strong taste. Price : Rs 60.50 (Approx AED 3.31) for a 15 ml bottle.

Colicaid EZ

Colicarmin – This is my favorite one because it seems to give instant relief to him. It’s an orange / red colored product. It’s a completely herbal product with Soya, Cardamom, Hing & Sanchal in it. This is a product I highly recommend. Price : Rs 40 (Approx AED 2.19) for a 30 ml bottle.

Colicarmin

Babylac powder – Introducing probiotics into your child’s body is a great way to combat indigestion, which inevitably leads to more gas production. The Lactic Acid Bacillus in this product creates healthy bacteria in your baby’s intestine. It’s a white colored powder, that should be diluted in water or milk. Price : Rs 73.70 (Approx AED 4.04) for a 30 gms container.

BabyLac

Other things that help :

● Putting baby in a prone position helps him to expel gas and be relieved.

● Holding him in an upright position while feeding helps him to swallow less air, thus creating less gas inside him.

● While preparing formula milk, don’t make it immediately before feeding, since you will be shaking the bottle during prep, which creates air bubbles in the milk. Let it settle for couple of minutes and then only offer it to your baby.

Hope this post helps you out in some way or the other. It’s not a comprehensive guide on colic yet these are things that have worked for me. All medicines mentioned above, except Gripe Water were bought after my doc prescribed it for him. Everything was purchased from India. If you would like to buy gripe water or other popular, over-the-counter colic products that doesn’t need a doctor’s prescription, check out this US based site that ships worldwide.
