Guest post : Aromatherapy & Pain

Pain as a sensation, both internal and external, has intrigued doctors and physicians for as long as people have been offering medical observations. With the explosion of technological equipment in recent decades, researchers are shining a new light on some surprising avenues as evidence is hinted at, through work in cutting edge research, of their potential benefits. One such relatively heretofore unexplored field that offers tantalizing promise is the research being made into the benefits of aromatherapy, or the therapeutic use of essential oils extracted from plants.

Aromatherapy

The Mayo Clinic, a leading organization of over three thousand doctors and medical professionals, while cautioning that research on the effectiveness of aromatherapy is still somewhat in its infancy, nonetheless offers several potential benefits as its guidance on the subject. Given the many, often insidious, stressors posed by the grind of the modern bustle, perhaps it is essential a person afford themselves as many opportunities to achieve their full potential productivity and feeling of wellbeing.

The miracle of modern medicine has instilled in many of us a great faith towards the power of drug treatment. It can be devastating when such options do not quite offer the relief they potentially advertise. Enter the benefits of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy Benefits

The prestigious Mayo Clinic offers several promising potential benefits that aromatherapy can offer. In particular, doctors there point to lavender oil as being especially beneficial in dealing with pain management. Cautioning with the usual tempered nature of medical professionals, the organization does stress that the research pointing to this potential benefits have stemmed from “smaller studies.” However, the promising data seems to indicate that aromatherapy, particularly the essence of lavender, will “reduce pain” in surgical and therapeutic settings. Symptomatic pain is a monster that can rear its many ugly heads in both the body and mind.

For the fatigues of the brain too, though, aromatherapy seems to offer some form of relief. It is reasonable to say that the majority of people, if not themselves suffering from it, have experienced to some degree the awfulness of depression. A sobering statistic concerning depression illustrates just how widespread the condition seems to be. In the United States, it is surprising to see that an estimated 16.1 million people have had “at least one major depressive episode in the past year,” and this number barely hints at the countless, though perhaps more manageable, fits of depressive feeling that can strike a person at times. Thankfully, a salve of some sort does seem to be available in the usage of aromatherapy. Potentially beneficial in combating depression, the Mayo Clinic attests that usage of essential oils may have “improved quality of life, particularly for people with chronic health conditions.” Demonstrable relief seems well worth the small investment in lavender oil.

How Aromatherapy connects

There is an established connection between the sense of smell and the limbic system of the brain, which processes emotions. Extrapolating this, several research points suggest an intriguing connection between aromatherapeutical procedures and the pain processing centers of the brain. Though of course more research is always preferred, and in the case of aromatherapy desired, researchers at the American Academy of Pain Medicine offer with certainty extensive observations concerning the “emotional and financial burden” stemming from the “cost of unrelieved pain,” pegging the condition as a 635 billion dollar burden on public health in the United States.

If new advancements in medical research seem to point to the potential benefit of aromatherapy, it is worthwhile the public be made aware. Physical pain, depression, and the many other worrying conditions out there haunting humankind, are rarely solved by one single solution alone. Aromatherapy may help, and if there is a pressing need to relax coming up, give essence of lavender a try. After all, it may just be the breath of fresh air one needs to feel a new rejuvenation.

Self-Awareness: Enhance Your Child’s Self-Esteem!

Cultivating a healthy self-esteem for your child is key to a lifetime of well-being and happiness. Children with high self-esteem value themselves and have a more realistic understanding of their strengths and weaknesses, while children with an unhealthy self-esteem, often have a hard time fitting in and don’t always have control of their emotions.

Research shows that more and more teenagers are suffering from low self-esteem, this is more prevalent in girls than boys. Statistics suggest that up to 70% of girls in Western countries suffer from low self-esteem especially when it comes to their body image. Girls as young as 10 years old are afraid of being over-weight and often compare themselves to their peers. On the other hand, the number one cause of low self-esteem with boys, is obesity.

Reasons for Low Self -Esteem

When parents are not responsive to the needs of their child, he or she can grow up without any attachment to their parents. Therefore, early nurturing is vital and helps set a child up and make him or her feel good about themselves. Moreover, if a parent is suffering from low self-esteem it tends to affect the child; a parent should never speak negatively or talk down about themselves in front of a child as this causes the child to feel that they too need to change something about themselves in order to be happy.

Way to Boost Self -Esteem

¤ Quality time

Spend quality time with your kids. Regardless of their age, do an activity together where you give full attention to them; this will make them feel important and hence improve their self-worth.

¤ Positive Image

Always reflect a positive image of your child. Your opinion of them counts, and they always want to please you. Thus, make sure you are giving them positive reflections.

¤ Give Responsibility

When a child see’s that you trust them to do something, they begin to feel they are an important part of the family. For example, when a teen is helping with the dishes, he/she gets a sense of accomplishment when the job is finished.

¤ Being Part of a Team

Children that are involved in sports or other team activities are less likely to experience low self-esteem because being part of a team gives the child a sense of belonging. It also helps them work together with others towards a common goal.

Always encourage your child to express their feelings instead of hiding them. Make sure that your home is a safe zone where a child can say whatever they feel without fear of judgement.

Dealing with Colic in Babies!

Hey all,

I wouldn’t categorize my son as colicky buy there are times when no amount of trying, makes him stop crying. This inconsolable crying that is intense and lasts for some time is the condition called Colic. This is a common condition and can start from as early as 2 weeks and last until 6th month. In my son, I noticed this from 3.5 months onwards. He is 5 months old now.

Some symptoms :

● Crying starts just like that without any particular reason
● No amount of trying helps
● Baby passes more gas
● His little tummy seems swollen
● He furrows his brows with the intensity of crying
● He brings up his legs towards his stomach and clenches stomach muscles

There is no particular cure for Colic. Only passing of time and some medicines will help relieve the baby. Here are the medicines that I use for him, so that he feels relieved from the gas build up in his stomach :

Gripe water – This is a very popular product that is given to such babies. I bought one too. It was an over-the-counter purchase and not with a prescription from the doctor. It’s by the brand Woodward’s, which is popular where I live. It’s a gentle antacid and helps to calm down any acid reflux that happens in the baby. It is colorless and has a soothing taste. Price : Rs 40 (Approx AED 2.19) for a 130 ml bottle.

Gripe water

Colicaid Drops – This is made to deal with Infant Colic, Griping Pain & Flatulence. It’s a thick, white product. It contains Dill oil, Fennel oil and Simethicone, which is an active ingredient that helps relieve colic. Price : Rs 66 (Approx AED 3.61) for a 30 ml bottle.

Colicaid

Colicaid EZ– Produced by the same company that produces Colicaid Drops, this one is slightly different. The ‘EZ’ in the name stands for Enzyme. This works better than the previous one. It contains Diastase, Pepsin and Simethicone. It’s made to relieve Indigestion, Flatulence & Infant Colic. It’s brown in color, thick in consistency and has a very strong taste. Price : Rs 60.50 (Approx AED 3.31) for a 15 ml bottle.

Colicaid EZ

Colicarmin – This is my favorite one because it seems to give instant relief to him. It’s an orange / red colored product. It’s a completely herbal product with Soya, Cardamom, Hing & Sanchal in it. This is a product I highly recommend. Price : Rs 40 (Approx AED 2.19) for a 30 ml bottle.

Colicarmin

Babylac powder – Introducing probiotics into your child’s body is a great way to combat indigestion, which inevitably leads to more gas production. The Lactic Acid Bacillus in this product creates healthy bacteria in your baby’s intestine. It’s a white colored powder, that should be diluted in water or milk. Price : Rs 73.70 (Approx AED 4.04) for a 30 gms container.

BabyLac

Other things that help :

● Putting baby in a prone position helps him to expel gas and be relieved.

● Holding him in an upright position while feeding helps him to swallow less air, thus creating less gas inside him.

● While preparing formula milk, don’t make it immediately before feeding, since you will be shaking the bottle during prep, which creates air bubbles in the milk. Let it settle for couple of minutes and then only offer it to your baby.

Hope this post helps you out in some way or the other. It’s not a comprehensive guide on colic yet these are things that have worked for me. All medicines mentioned above, except Gripe Water were bought after my doc prescribed it for him. Everything was purchased from India. If you would like to buy gripe water or other popular, over-the-counter colic products that doesn’t need a doctor’s prescription, check out this US based site that ships worldwide.

Are you tired of being fooled?

DON’T BE FOREVER FOOLED THIS APRIL: VICTORIA’S SECRET MEDIA INFLUENCER AND TV PERSONALITY AMY KITCHINGMAN REVEALS 4 OF THE BIGGEST WEIGHT LOSS MYTHS

Amy Kitchingman

Have you been working out so hard for more than 6 months now but you have not seen any result so far? Have you been skipping that dessert since Christmas but you are still desperately looking at that sagging stomach? Have you been aiming and rushing to lose weight for the summer season but you can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel?.

Amy Kitchingman, official presenter for Physique TV’s On The Go, former Miss Great Britain and the new media influencer for the humongous brand Victoria’s Secret sports collection enumerates 4 of the most common weight loss myths that can deceive you, with or without April Fool’s Day!

MYTH #1: THE GREEN LIGHT IS ON FOR ALL GREEN TEA

FACT: Green tea is definitely one of nature’s best gifts to mankind as it fights toxins, improves mental alertness and helps aid weight loss, but this doesn’t mean that all green tea products that are on the market are good for you.

I’ve seen green tea candy with 50 calories per candy, green tea chocolate with more than 100 calories, green tea chips with more than 200 calories per pack and the worst of them all – the green tea shake that has more than 500 calories per cup as much as a burger with fries!

Green tea is amazing but only in its purest form. The next time you see ‘green tea’ products, Read the back of the label. If theres anything in there that you cant pronounce,(and this rule goes for pretty much everything) and  doesn’t sound like it comes straight from the green tea plant then put it down.

MYTH #2: DIET FOODS WILL MAKE YOU THIN

FACT: Although diet food may contain less calories, you have to think about all the nasties ( E numbers and chemicals we cant even pronounce) that have to go inside them to make them taste like the original version. Personally, I keep away from diet food and prefer to eat plenty of the right food, organic foods, in their natural state. Not only is this going to help me maintain my diet long term instead of binging on diet foods, that really aren’t going to satisfy my bodies nutritional needs. But natural foods are going to help my hair, teeth and skin look great too, as well as my waistline.

MYTH #3: LESS FOOD, LESS MISTAKE

FACT: This is probably the worst myth that anyone can believe and sadly there are still many people who believes it. Starving or skipping meals is the greatest mistake that you can do to your body. Our body is like a machine and it needs regular fuel to be able to work. Instead of creating a habit that may lead to disorders such as anorexia, try to develop a healthy eating routine in small portions such as 3 light meals and 2 snacks a day composed of fruits and nuts.

If you’re combining your diet with a work out you also need to be able to fuel that workout affectively. So feed your body!.

MYTH #4: FITNESS IS A SPRINT, NOT A MARATHON

FACT: When people say they are starting a diet, I always ask their near term goals, which are usually to loose weight. And then the long term goals which are usually to keep the weight they have lost off. But to enable this to happen, you need to adapt to a healthy lifestyle. Not just a quick fix of the latest trending diet. These fads are never going to leave you with the long term results you want.Adapting to an overall healthy lifestyle will help you achieve what it is you want, and help you maintain it. I lost a substantial amount of weight over 4 months but those changes that I made back then to enable me to loose the weight in the first place I still practise now.Achieving your fitness goals is not a race, its about how you can make them benefit you the longest.

Four Vitamin B Rich Foods for Hair Growth!

We all want to look our best. So dull, brittle hair can be a real problem. It can also be the sign of a bigger problem, like a vitamin B complex deficiency. What if there was a simple and delicious solution? Getting enough of the right kinds of B vitamins provides your body with the tools it needs to create fast-growing, radiant hair.

A vitamin B deficiency can affect all aspects of hair growth and more. These are just a few of the symptoms:

● Dandruff and Rashes
● Thinning Hair and Hair Loss
● Premature Greying
● Hormone Imbalances Which Affect Hair Growth
● Depression and Irritability

It’s important to know there are several kinds of B vitamins, and they are all essential for your well-being. Take a look at these four healthy foods loaded with B vitamins and other nutrients that support healthy, beautiful hair.

1. Greek Yogurt

Greek Yogurt

Plenty of protein is also required for strong hair, and that’s what makes Greek yogurt so great. In addition to healthy animal protein, it’s got vitamin B2 (riboflavin) to help you process the protein and vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) to promote good scalp circulation.

The rich content of B12 is Greek yogurt’s highest claim though, with almost 30% of your daily requirement per serving. This vitamin services the metabolic functions of your body which make hair growth possible, and a vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with premature graying and hair loss.

2. Eggs

Eggs

Eggs are some of the most potent foods on the planet, and their combination of key nutrients is perfect for promoting hair growth. Like Greek yogurt, eggs are full of protein and B12. They also contain another important B complex vitamin, B7 (biotin). Biotin has been related to longer, stronger hair and its benefits extend to the skin and nails as well.

It doesn’t matter how you cook your eggs, but the most hair-friendly nutrients are in the yolk. Eating a few eggs a week can make your hair stronger and your skin brighter.

3. Walnuts

Walnuts

Another great source of biotin are walnuts, but that’s not all they have to offer. Walnuts are also the most rich nut in omega-3 fatty acids, providing almost an entire daily requirement in ¼ cup. Omega-3s perform numerous body functions, including keeping hair flexible and strong.

The amino acid, L-arginine, is also potently found in walnuts. It’s been used in topical hair growth formulas for its restorative effects, and ingested it aids with circulation and blood flow. These nutrients together make walnuts ideal for those interested in improving the health of their scalp and hair.

4. Oysters

Oysters

The combination of hair-enriching nutrients found in oysters offers a powerful solution to the types of nutrient deficiencies that ravage hair. Oysters are an incredible source of B12, protein and zinc, and a moderate source of B2 and B6. They provide omega-3 fatty acids, too, making oysters the most beneficial food on the list.

The importance of oyster’s outstanding zinc content can’t be overstated. Zinc deficiencies lead quickly to hair loss. Zinc plays many roles, including cell development, hormone balance and enabling other nutrients to be absorbed. All of these things are related to the growth of full, healthy hair, and when eaten together with B complex vitamins can visibly improve hair quality. Oysters provide all these benefits and more.

A Balanced Diet

By eating a balanced diet of hair-enriching foods like these, you can give your body the tools to reach its full potential. Don’t be fooled into thinking you need supplements or expensive products to achieve the smooth, shiny hair you deserve; the ingredients to your success are all around you!

For a particularly powerful infusion of B vitamins and other essential nutrients for hair health, try a spinach and salmon omelette with a small side of greek yogurt. The iron from the spinach and the healthy fats from the salmon will give a boost to the B vitamins and other building blocks of your new luscious locks!

iHerb Haul #8 – Tea, Skincare & more!

Hey guys!

Happy 2016 ♡. Hope you all had a great start to this year!

Screenshot_2016-01-08-02-24-38-1-1

First post of 2016, I wanted it to be about something am passionate about. Lol!. Am so passionate about shopping on iHerb :D. This haul is from Aug 2015. Here are the things I bought :

iHerb1

1) Premium Black Cumin seed oil by Amazing Herbs – I have done an entire post on the benefits of black cumin seed oil before. It’s miraculous. This time, I bought 4 bottles for my father & uncle, because both of them suffers from back and leg pain. External application of this oil reduced their pain so much that they asked me to order more.

iHerb2

They all came individually packed this time. I recently received an email from someone asking me if this oil could help alleviate his mom’s cancer and I said definitely give this oil a try. When researching this product, I read that it can cure cancer if it’s in the initial stage. It’s that powerful.

Price : $19.49 (AED 71.59) per bottle, each containing 236 ml. iHerb’s price for this product is 35% lesser than it’s market price.

2 & 3) I haven’t really delved into the world of loose leaf teas. However, during August, Just A Leaf Organic teas had a massive sale going on. All their teas were priced at just a dollar each!. I got the following two tins :

China Rose Infused Black tea – This tea contains organic black tea leaves, organic red rose petals & natural essence of rose. It has a really refreshing taste and the scent of roses is truly invigorating. Love it. The pieces of rose petals are so nice to taste in between the sips of this lovely tea.

iHerb3

iHerb4

Price : $10.22 (AED 37.54) for a tin containing 99 gms. But I got it for $1 (AED 3.67)!

Bergamot Grey tea – This tea contains organic black tea leaves & organic essence of Bergamot. I chose this tea mainly because I have found that I like any perfume that has bergamot listed in one of it’s notes. It has a nice citrussy smell & a very strong, spice like taste.

iHerb5

iHerb6

Price : $9.45 (AED 34.71) for a tin containing 99 gms. But I got it for $1 (AED 3.67)!

Currently all Just A Leaf organic teas that iHerb stocks are those which comes in sealed packs. Tin packaging has been discontinued. That’s why I haven’t listed the direct links to these two products here.

4) Hand cream with Argan nut oil by Madre Labs– Before checking out after placing all products in my cart, I always check the Trials section, which lists trial sized products and also full sized products at an amazingly discounted price. This time, I saw this hand cream by Madre Labs, which is unscented & full sized.

iHerb7

It’s key ingredients are oils of Argan nut, jojoba, sesame, avocado, olive and coconut plus shea butter. It contains no parabens. It’s a thick white cream. It’s very moisturizing. One advice I gotta give is to work with a pea sized amount only. More the amount of cream, the more it keeps spreading & the more you have to rub it into the skin to get it absorbed. But with a smaller amount, it gets easily absorbed. Also, though it says ‘unscented’, it has the faintest scent of Argan oil.

iHerb8

Price : $7.95 (AED 29.20) for a tube containing 71 gms. However, I got it for a trial price of only $0.10 (AED 0.37)!

Currently in Jan 2016, this product is still listed in the Trials section at $0.10. Definitely give it a try!

Discounts & Shipping

During August, iHerb had a VIP discount going on. Depending on your bill total different percentages of discounts were being given. Since my bill total was $60+, I received the highest discount of 10% :). My shipping charge came to $11.01 (AED 40.44). It reached in UAE from US, via DHL, in 3 days. Love how fast their shipping always is ♡

Use my code SCZ695 at check out to receive an instant discount of $5 from your bill total.

Kick Your Way To Fitness with Rafat Shawe this October!

Martial arts based fitness training and cardio kickboxing is one of the hottest fitness trends across the world in recent years.  Spurred on by the success of Billy Blanks and his Tae-Bo, as well as the unprecedented popularity of the UFC and champions Anderson Silva and more recently Ronda Rousey, martial arts-inspired workouts are motivating many people to get off the couch and into a fitness program.

Dubai based professional MMA fighter and former international karate gold medalist Rafat Shawe is just one of the fantastic martial arts talent to be based in the Middle East and this October sees him launch his new kickboxing bootcamps in Dubai. Rafat’s kickboxing bootcamps blend boxing, martial arts and cardio kickboxing in a fantastic total body workout.

Well-known as an excellent form of stress release, martial arts-inspired workouts also improve strength, aerobic fitness and flexibility. The variety of movements used in kickboxing can sharpen reflexes and improve co-ordination and balance. Even better, most participants can expect to burn at least 600 calories during a typical cardio kickboxing class. Rafat’s new outdoor cardio kickboxing bootcamps kick off on Sunday 11th October.

The bootcamps will take place as follows:

• Sunday 7.00pm, Palm Park, Palm Jumeirah
• Tuesday 6.30am, Palm Park, Palm Jumeirah

Additional bootcamps at other locations in Dubai will be announced soon.  Each bootcamp costs AED 100 or AED 800 if you sign up for a package of 10.
