Today I am reviewing an Urban Tween Fantasy Thriller book titled Drasine by Geoffrey Saign. More about the author:
He has a background in biology, assisted in field research with hummingbirds and humpback whales, and sailed as far away as Australia. With more than twenty years of experience working in special education, he has taught adults and children everything from sailing to self-awareness to novel writing. He lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.
A story about love, nature, wildlife, intuition, and trusting yourself.
Samantha and Jake have one and a half days to find and free the golden dragon, Drasine, from her deadly captor and turn her over to the murderous leader of the Lesser smugglers, or Jake will be killed. Sam is also worried Jake is going to leave her, and Jake has even worse concerns that he won’t tell Sam. Forced to fight in a Death Match against deranged Lessers, Sam and Jake learn that the secret mentor of Gorgon, the Evil One, is behind everything, and that one of them may have to die to save the other……nonstop action, monsters, & giant creatures—with quirky humor.
Samantha a.k.a Sam & Jake have yet another adventure, but this time far more dangerous than ever before. The monsters are bigger, the stakes are higher and the risks are much more.
Drasine is a golden dragon, whose flames can heal and empower anyone who touches it. That makes her much desirable for everyone who wants power. But she is kidnapped & guarded by a very strong creature, whose power and abilities are unknown to Sam & Jake. Yet they face him and try to rescue Drasine. But once they get there, they understand that the story is very much different than what they’ve been told. Drasine doesn’t want to be rescued and there are much bigger things to worry about.
An interesting character, the Evil One, makes the book truly irresistible, because no one knows who or what it is nor what it’s powers are. There are multiple characters who are accused to be the Evil One. That’s a suspense, a thrilling one too, since it turns out to be one whom you would never suspect.
The author’s creativity and imagination astonishes & awes me. He has created such beautiful scenarios in the land of the Great Ones, Kiraku and has come up with some really badass monsters that are truly evil and powerful. The twists and turns in this book are least expected and makes it more happening than a wild rollercoaster ride!. I just couldn’t put the book down. It has amazing descriptions of animals that I never knew existed and the stunts between the guardians and the baddies are described very well. The book cover is interesting, showing Drasine, her captor, the guardians & their magical staffs.
This is the most interesting book in the Whipeye Chronicles. Though you can still enjoy a good story, even if you are not reading it in the chronological order, I wish to remind that it is not a standalone book and you will need to read the first two books to properly understand the backstory and some characters from those books, mentioned here.
Overall, it’s a powerful, action packed book suitable for both children and adults. I can’t recommend you this book enough. I haven’t read a more happening book of late and all I can think after reading it is “Whoa what a (rollercoaster) ride!. I wish it hadn’t finished”. The way the book ends, the author promises yet another adventure, and thus a fourth book in this series. I just can’t wait to read it! ♥
I give this book 5 out of 5 stars which by Goodreads standards mean I ‘loved it’!
