Book Review and Giveaway : Drasine by Geoffrey Saign!

Hello!

Today I am reviewing an Urban Tween Fantasy Thriller book titled Drasine by Geoffrey Saign. More about the author:

Geoffrey

Geoffrey Saign’s passion for nature and wildlife led to his award-winning fantasy series, WhipEye Chronicles. The author of the Divided Draghons & Bubblegum Mike series, his first books were Green Essentials: What You Need to Know About the Environment, African Cats and Great Apes. After teaching a self-awareness class for nearly a decade, combined with his own background in stress reduction, he wrote the professionally acclaimed Stress Free from Rainy Day Syndrome: A Practical Guide to End Stress, Restore Calm, and Find Happiness.

He has a background in biology, assisted in field research with hummingbirds and humpback whales, and sailed as far away as Australia. With more than twenty years of experience working in special education, he has taught adults and children everything from sailing to self-awareness to novel writing. He lives in St. Paul, Minnesota.

Book Summary

Drasine

A story about love, nature, wildlife, intuition, and trusting yourself.

Samantha and Jake have one and a half days to find and free the golden dragon, Drasine, from her deadly captor and turn her over to the murderous leader of the Lesser smugglers, or Jake will be killed. Sam is also worried Jake is going to leave her, and Jake has even worse concerns that he won’t tell Sam. Forced to fight in a Death Match against deranged Lessers, Sam and Jake learn that the secret mentor of Gorgon, the Evil One, is behind everything, and that one of them may have to die to save the other……nonstop action, monsters, & giant creatures—with quirky humor.

My Review

Samantha a.k.a Sam & Jake have yet another adventure, but this time far more dangerous than ever before. The monsters are bigger, the stakes are higher and the risks are much more.

Drasine is a golden dragon, whose flames can heal and empower anyone who touches it. That makes her much desirable for everyone who wants power. But she is kidnapped & guarded by a very strong creature, whose power and abilities are unknown to Sam & Jake. Yet they face him and try to rescue Drasine. But once they get there, they understand that the story is very much different than what they’ve been told. Drasine doesn’t want to be rescued and there are much bigger things to worry about.

An interesting character, the Evil One, makes the book truly irresistible, because no one knows who or what it is nor what it’s powers are. There are multiple characters who are accused to be the Evil One. That’s a suspense, a thrilling one too, since it turns out to be one whom you would never suspect.

The author’s creativity and imagination astonishes & awes me. He has created such beautiful scenarios in the land of the Great Ones, Kiraku and has come up with some really badass monsters that are truly evil and powerful. The twists and turns in this book are least expected and makes it more happening than a wild rollercoaster ride!. I just couldn’t put the book down. It has amazing descriptions of animals that I never knew existed and the stunts between the guardians and the baddies are described very well. The book cover is interesting, showing Drasine, her captor, the guardians & their magical staffs.

This is the most interesting book in the Whipeye Chronicles. Though you can still enjoy a good story, even if you are not reading it in the chronological order, I wish to remind that it is not a standalone book and you will need to read the first two books to properly understand the backstory and some characters from those books, mentioned here.

Overall, it’s a powerful, action packed book suitable for both children and adults. I can’t recommend you this book enough. I haven’t read a more happening book of late and all I can think after reading it is “Whoa what a (rollercoaster) ride!. I wish it hadn’t finished”. The way the book ends, the author promises yet another adventure, and thus a fourth book in this series. I just can’t wait to read it! ♥

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars which by Goodreads standards mean I ‘loved it’!

Book Review : Fearless Joe Dearborne by Lisa Whitney Mitchell!

Hello!

Today I am reviewing Middle Grade/Tween book titled Fearless Joe Dearborne by Lisa Whitney Mitchell. More about the author:

Lisa Whitney Mitchell lives in Florida with her husband, two sons, and their dog. When she’s not writing, she practices law. Fearless Joe Dearborne is her first novel.

Book Summary

PP-Native-Cover_4475967_Front-Cover2-640x1024

Some might say he’s courageous, while others would say he’s daring, maybe even a little crazy. But when Joe Dearborne risked his life and ran into a burning building to save a puppy, the local newspaper referred to him as “fearless”—and that’s a pretty big title for a sixth-grader to live up to.

Plus, Joe already has plenty else to worry about. After other daring feats in the past, Joe promised his father he wouldn’t do anything dangerous again, and, alas, he’s just broken that promise.

But whatever trouble he expects to get into with his father, and despite the dangers he’s triumphed over in the past, nothing could prepare Joe for what he’s about to encounter when a cold, bitterness creeps into his home.

A mysterious and peculiar woman named Mrs. Chill has just been hired to care for Joe while his father is away on business. In no time, however, Joe discovers that she’s up to more than cooking and cleaning, and she has plans to destroy his family. Joe’s effort to save them results in perilous, sometimes humorous, encounters, and leads him on a journey through the threatening wilderness where he faces his greatest challenge yet.

My Review

The book cover is really nice, particularly the big, bold font used for the title. It carries the feeling of ‘fearlessness’ in it. I kind of relate it to some game I used to play when I was younger – Indiana Jones!. The devilish character in the background shown on the cover, is a coyote and I love how artistically it’s shown. The protagonist is a sixth grader, Joe Dearborne. He doesn’t have the feeling of fear in him!. That makes him do things like saving a puppy by rushing into a burning house and more. Thus he earns the name Fearless Joe Dearborne!

However, a casual comment from a fan of his, makes him doubt himself and he does something reckless just to know if he could experience fear. Unfortunately, he does and something within him changes overnight. Joe is so modest and humble. He doesn’t lap up the attention everyone gives him, instead he likes to keep to himself. He looks up to Trent Rapids, a survival expert who has traveled the world and wrote a series about his experiences. Joe happens to be in a situation whereby he takes inspiration from what he read and applies it to his situation, thus saving the day!.

There are some hilarious events in this book that are equally given importance as are the dangerous ones. The author has really thought out and written an excellent story, managing the level of danger perfectly. I didn’t expect that level of danger, but it indeed is so thrilling and exciting. I couldn’t put this book down and soon, I was flying through the pages, wanting to know more. The author has successfully woven an exciting story!

There are many important characters in the story but the most important one is Mrs. Chill, who as her name suggests, is a cold woman, with a heart of stone. She is a conniving lady, with ulterior motives, who happens to be appointed as Joe’s housekeeper. Joe soon understands that this lady is upto no good. If he doesn’t do something, there will be several deaths. Was he successful and did he emerge a hero?. You got to read the books to know more!. This book is meant for kids of age 8 and up. Joe can easily inspire young readers, make them more brave and perceptive. What an excellent read!. I cannot believe this is this author’s very first novel!

I give this book 5 out of 5, which by Goodreads standards mean that ‘it was amazing’!

Book Review : Frizzy The S.A.D Elf by Dorothea Jenson!

Hi!

Today I am reviewing a Children’s picture book, titled Frizzy the S.A.D Elf by Dorothea Jenson. Let’s get to know the author a bit more.

image

Dorothea Jensen has a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Carleton College, and a Master of Arts degree in Secondary Education from the University of New Mexico. She is the author of The Riddle of Penncroft Farm, an award-winning novel for young readers about the American Revolution. Named an International Reading Association’s Teachers’ Choice Selection soon after publication, it is read in schools throughout the United States. More recently, Riddle earned a first prize in the historical fiction category of the 2014 Purple Dragonfly Award, and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt published an e-book edition in 2014, twenty-five years after its original release.Deedy recently completed A Buss From Lafayette, another historical novel for middle graders. She is now working on a new story, set in seventeenth century Massachusetts, called A Scalp on the Moon. The fifth Izzy Elf story, featuring Bizzy, is also in the works. For more information about Dorothea and her books, please visit http://izzyelves.com/ or  http://www.dorotheajensen.com/

Book Summary

image

Santa’s Izzy Elves stories are not your usual picture books – older kids who enjoy playing with words and rhythmical verse will love them, too. One reason for this is that although their stories are told in verse echoing the famous 19th century poem: A VISIT FROM SAINT NICHOLAS, Santa’s Izzy Elves are definitely 21st century, with electronics galore!FRIZZY, THE S.A.D. ELF is the fourth of these poetic tales.

In this story, Frizzy, one of Santa’s Izzy Elves, styles the hair of Christmas dollies, but misses them dreadfully when Santa takes them away on Christmas Eve. (She suffers from S.A.D.: Seasonal Affection Distress.) Frizzy decides she needs to change her job so she doesn’t get so attached to the toys she works on. She starts making something completely different but soon finds that her plan isn’t going to work out exactly as she intended!

My Review

The book cover shows Frizzy the elf, sitting with some pictures of her dolls in her hand and her head hung low characteristic of being sad!. It looks apt as the title itself calls Frizzy, a sad elf.

We are introduced to Frizzy in the book, being upset that the dolls that she creates each year are taken away by Santa Claus (or S.C, as he is fondly called by all) to distribute to kids on Christmas. The problem was she was getting way too attached to her creations. She was suffering from S.A.D, which stands for Seasonal Affection Distress!. Finally she decides to try decorating things she thought she wouldn’t get attached to. But she has this need to ‘prettify’ everything and that makes her all the more sad.

What I loved the most about this book is that the entire thing is written in rhymes!. Sometimes you read rhymes and end up thinking how familiar it sounds and how cliche certain rhyming word combinations are. However, in this book, the author keeps it real fresh and it’s a delight reading it. Also, the elves are so high tech!. They upload photos of the toys they make and children have the option to add it to their wishlist. What a novel idea!.

Frizzy’s friends are all nice and supportive. S.C is so laid back and understanding. He solves Frizzy’s S.A.D syndrome and makes her happy. This is a very cute book that will capture the attention of little readers and make them fall in love with the rhymes. Every now and then there are some very beautiful illustrations by talented Shayne Hood, in the book.

I give this adorable book 5 out of 5 which by Goodreads standards mean ‘it was amazing!’.

The Early Buzz

“I just LOVED this little book. Empowering for young girls, and at the same time powerful for young boys… The illustrations are perfect for this book: fun and eye-grabbing, and I also love that it includes facts about popular icons like Aretha Franklin and Baseball legends. Well done! ” ~ 5 Star Review, Mariana L., Amazon

“Roxie Rogers is an inspiring read for all ages, truly. It speaks to that little voice inside all of us telling us “come out” to the real you. The artwork brings the story to life, and the text is great for read-along or for young readers on their own.” ~ 5 Star Review, Laura, Amazon

“I just read Roxy Rogers to my 5-year old daughter and we both loved the book! The story was fun and engaging filled with dynamic illustrations. Besides the great life messages woven into the story, I really like how the story reads. It is really nice to experience a children’s book that is not mind numbing in its repetitiveness (you know the type) with words that flow easily off the pages. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Wendigo, Amazon

About the Author: Emily Siskin-Toy

Emily Siskin-ToyA U.C. Santa Cruz banana slug alum, Emily Siskin-Toy launched her writing career with posts at various film and television magazines in Los Angeles. After a break in the action to raise her daughter, Emily and her college sweetheart founded WOW! Music Studios, a successful children’s music instruction school in Mill Valley, California.

But just like the character in her book, Emily’s true passion was something entirely different; she always dreamed of writing children’s books. Inspiration was everywhere for Roxy Rogers: Your Destiny Is Calling. While coaching her daughter’s youth softball and basketball teams, Emily eventually came to realize that the world of sports was a passion of hers, not her daughter’s, who really wanted, of course, to be a singer. The plot of the story was right in front of her, and the surrounding details would be cultivated from her lifetime of love for the rich history of Major League Baseball and her daughter’s love of music.

“Who knew geography and learning about animals could be this much fun? Lobo Goes to the Galapagos is my new favorite children’s book and is highly recommended. ” ~ Jack Magnus, Readers’ Favorite

“While Ms, Murphy’s uniquely whimsical and vibrant illustrative style is perfectly suited for the wild, tropical feel of this colorful book, and easily captures young readers’ attention, there is also a subtle, quiet beauty to the storyline’s overarching themes of friendship, trust, perseverance, and goodwill. Lobo’s tenacious and giving spirit are delightfully captured in this fifth installment of puppy-fueled fun. In fact, it’s sincerely so easy to fall in love with “Lovable” Lobo that I’d happily follow this well-meaning, big-hearted, wolf pup to the very ends of the earth!” ~ 5 Star Review, Indie Author Girl, Amazon

“What an adorable story! I read this to my nephew and he couldn’t stop giggling at the silliness of Roxy as well as Lobo’s cute friends Bobby, Sunny, Coconut and Sandra. Book Review : Sing Along Construction Song by Louise Lintvelt!

Today, I am reviewing a children’s picture book titled Sing Along Construction Song by Louise Lintvelt. Here is a personal introduction from the author herself!

Author-Photo-213x300

I am from South Africa and I live in a city called Pretoria. I am a Chemical Engineer by day and a children’s book writer by night. I am married to a wonderful man and we have a beautiful two year old daughter called Allegra. I love writing stories for my daughter, who is a constant inspiration. When it comes to writing, my daughter is my biggest inspiration. I love seeing her face light up with excitement when we sit down to read a book before bedtime.

My daughter was fascinated by giraffes after we went on a safari trip in late 2012. This planted the seed for my picture book called How Andrew Got His Spots which is a rhyming adaptation of a story I originally wrote in the third grade. My daughter has since grown into a healthy two year old with a passion for aircraft which was the inspiration for writing Goodnight, Sleep tight, What a Wonderful Flight.

Book Summary

Sing-Along-Construction-Song-1024x1024

A fun sing-along book for little construction enthusiasts.Visit the construction site early in the morning and join the rough and tough construction vehicles, as they go about their daily work.

My Review

The book cover is really cute and cheerful. The book is about construction vehicles at the construction site, going about their daily work, early in the morning. There is a cheerful energy in the rhyming sentences that is so contagious!. It is super cute and the illustrations by Julie Sneeden, will keep little readers glued to the pages. Each construction vehicle does a different job and the pages highlight it in simple words.

Screenshot_2014-09-12-01-45-12-1

There is a free song to download from the author’s website. You can play it and then sing along with it while going through the pages. The song is sung to the same tune as the popular nursery rhyme Round the Mulberry Bush. Listening to the song, I couldn’t help but think how adorable it is. I was quite surprised when later in the day, I found myself humming the song while doing some chore!. That’s how catchy the song is!. It’s a lovely book for children between ages 1- 5.

I give this delightful book 5 out of 5, which by Goodreads standards mean, ‘it was amazing’.

The Buzz About Books 1 & 2

Book 1: “I am 7 years old, and I loved this book because of EJ’s imagination and how it focused on the real meaning of Christmas. The book made me laugh, and I especially liked the part when EJ used the shopping cart to pretend to be a race car driver. She thought her mom’s scarf was a yellow flag, and she stopped just before she crashed into the display of glue bottles. I liked EJ’s character, and I read the book in about 5 days. When we had “Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character Day” at school, I dressed up like EJ Payne. I can’t wait for the second book in this series!” ~ Emily E., Amazon

Book 1: “My 9-year-old foster daughter loved the book! She related well to EJ and her spunky personality and humorous outlook on life and what it hands you. Great lessons for her to learn, as well as entertaining. She read it in a matter of days and even chose reading it over playing Nintendo, which is a huge endorsement! I also enjoyed it and found it a fun and comforting read for this 40-something adult. Great job. We’re really looking forward to Book 2 of EJ’s adventures at camp! Thanks, Annie!” ~ Lfierbaugh, Amazon

Book 2: “Church Camp Chaos is a delightfully funny look into the highly imaginative workings of a tween girl, EJ Payne. The book cleverly uses a combination of diary entries, narration, and hilarious passages peeking into EJ’s daydreams. The story is originally clever and, at times, very poignant. I thoroughly enjoyed this fantastic book and I highly recommend this series to young girls in particular between the ages of 8 and 12 who also love Clementine, Judy Moody, and Ramona Quimby.” ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews

Book 2: “Curly, my 8-year-old bookworm, loved this book. The day it arrived in the mail I let her look through it. By that evening she brought the book to me to thank me and tell me she was finished. She read the entire book in one day and I don’t think she ever put it down! She enjoyed EJ’s adventures and the fun times she had at church camp. She told me the book was “funny.” I appreciated the way the book treated family relationships and showed a loving family who works together and endures different situations together. EJ and her brother don’t always get along but their parents encourage them to be kind and EJ grows to appreciate her brother and even his slightly obnoxious attempts at humor. I enjoyed the life lessons that EJ learned about trust, faith, and friendship and am glad that I can find books for my daughter to read that are humorous and fun while still promoting good values.” ~ 5 Star Review, Lextin Academy, Amazon

The Buzz About the Book

Finding Fuzzy is an early chapter book featuring the opportunity for children to create their own ending to a sweet, summertime story. The main character, Jenna, has a decision to make when she discovers that her beloved stuffed bunny she had lost is now being used to protect a litter of kittens. After weighing out all of the possible outcomes, it is up to the reader to decide what happens next in the story. I thought this was a unique concept that will interest children, especially ones who are interested in writing their own stories (like my daughter!). I recommend this book to parents, homeschoolers, and teachers with children between the ages of 5 and 10.” ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews

“The story is sweet, and suitable for all children. The book is set up to get kids to think and discuss what they would do in a certain situation–in this case, giving up a precious friend (the stuffed bunny.) I could see using this in either a classroom setting or as a bedtime story. The watercolor illustrations really capture a beachy mood and create a great visual for kids as well.. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Nikki B., Goodreads

“Cat Michaels has put young readers in a position to solve the dilemma. Readers must brainstorm and utilize their critical thinking skills to write the ending to Jenna’s story. This quick to read chapter book has small colorful illustrations that help readers imagine the beach. Readers will also find that the author has created a world where they use all five senses. The back of the book has tips for parents and teachers to help their readers.. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Kristi B., Goodreads

“This is a book with a difference. The space where the ending should be is blank, leaving readers with the opportunity to take a far more pro-active role in the unfolding of the story. It’s time to get creative. It’s time to give the story your own ending! There’s room for a picture as well, so the budding author can test out their illustration skills too!” ~ 5 Star Review, Peachy Emma, Amazon

“The genius here is that Cat has picked the perfect storyline to make your would be writers put themselves into Jenna’s shoes and truly understand how she feels. It’s the stuffed animal, every child has one and every child is very attached to it. This is a great book for it’s educational value as far as letting the kids use their imagination to come up with their own conclusion. —-5 stars for this one!” ~ Bookroom Reviews, Amazon
