Guest post : Aromatherapy & Pain

Pain as a sensation, both internal and external, has intrigued doctors and physicians for as long as people have been offering medical observations. With the explosion of technological equipment in recent decades, researchers are shining a new light on some surprising avenues as evidence is hinted at, through work in cutting edge research, of their potential benefits. One such relatively heretofore unexplored field that offers tantalizing promise is the research being made into the benefits of aromatherapy, or the therapeutic use of essential oils extracted from plants.

Aromatherapy

The Mayo Clinic, a leading organization of over three thousand doctors and medical professionals, while cautioning that research on the effectiveness of aromatherapy is still somewhat in its infancy, nonetheless offers several potential benefits as its guidance on the subject. Given the many, often insidious, stressors posed by the grind of the modern bustle, perhaps it is essential a person afford themselves as many opportunities to achieve their full potential productivity and feeling of wellbeing.

The miracle of modern medicine has instilled in many of us a great faith towards the power of drug treatment. It can be devastating when such options do not quite offer the relief they potentially advertise. Enter the benefits of aromatherapy.

Aromatherapy Benefits

The prestigious Mayo Clinic offers several promising potential benefits that aromatherapy can offer. In particular, doctors there point to lavender oil as being especially beneficial in dealing with pain management. Cautioning with the usual tempered nature of medical professionals, the organization does stress that the research pointing to this potential benefits have stemmed from “smaller studies.” However, the promising data seems to indicate that aromatherapy, particularly the essence of lavender, will “reduce pain” in surgical and therapeutic settings. Symptomatic pain is a monster that can rear its many ugly heads in both the body and mind.

For the fatigues of the brain too, though, aromatherapy seems to offer some form of relief. It is reasonable to say that the majority of people, if not themselves suffering from it, have experienced to some degree the awfulness of depression. A sobering statistic concerning depression illustrates just how widespread the condition seems to be. In the United States, it is surprising to see that an estimated 16.1 million people have had “at least one major depressive episode in the past year,” and this number barely hints at the countless, though perhaps more manageable, fits of depressive feeling that can strike a person at times. Thankfully, a salve of some sort does seem to be available in the usage of aromatherapy. Potentially beneficial in combating depression, the Mayo Clinic attests that usage of essential oils may have “improved quality of life, particularly for people with chronic health conditions.” Demonstrable relief seems well worth the small investment in lavender oil.

How Aromatherapy connects

There is an established connection between the sense of smell and the limbic system of the brain, which processes emotions. Extrapolating this, several research points suggest an intriguing connection between aromatherapeutical procedures and the pain processing centers of the brain. Though of course more research is always preferred, and in the case of aromatherapy desired, researchers at the American Academy of Pain Medicine offer with certainty extensive observations concerning the “emotional and financial burden” stemming from the “cost of unrelieved pain,” pegging the condition as a 635 billion dollar burden on public health in the United States.

If new advancements in medical research seem to point to the potential benefit of aromatherapy, it is worthwhile the public be made aware. Physical pain, depression, and the many other worrying conditions out there haunting humankind, are rarely solved by one single solution alone. Aromatherapy may help, and if there is a pressing need to relax coming up, give essence of lavender a try. After all, it may just be the breath of fresh air one needs to feel a new rejuvenation.

iHerb Haul #9 – Skincare products!

Hey beauties!

In September 2015, I was quite surprised one fine morning when I found an email from iHerb in my inbox stating that they are giving me $10 (AED 36.73) to shop on their site. That too, no conditions attached which means no minimum purchase required!. iHerb is my favorite online shopping site and I literally need no reason to go shopping there. However, I had just gone shopping there in the previous month (see my August haul post), so I was sceptical about spending more on things I don’t need right now. But I didn’t want this $10 to go to waste (it was valid for only 5 days), so I did just that.. I went shopping with that $10!. iHerb being a site that provides immense value, I was sure I would find something that would ‘fit my budget’. 😀

The first place I headed to is their Specials’ page, which lists special offers and also a 20% discount on 5-7 brands each week. That particular week, the brand EO Products captured my attention. It is a crueltyfree and glutenfree skincare & body care brand with the motto ‘Love Life. Live Clean’. After looking at the array of awesome products they offer, I chose their Rose & Chamomile body lotion.

iHerb

This is one of the best body lotions I have ever used. It gets absorbed so fast into the skin, it feels like your skin is drinking up the goodness!. It smells of rose, grapefruit, chamomile & glycerin. It’s such an uplifting scent, it feels like aromatherapy. All ingredients in it are organic and it also has essential oils in it. It is white in color, has a liquidy consistency and comes in a bottle with a pump, which is so convenient. It makes your skin feel super soft. I will make sure I look at more products from this brand, in my future purchases.

Price : $6.90 (AED 25.34) for a bottle containing 236 ml, but since it was one of the brands of the week, I got it for $5.52 (AED 20.27)

Next, I headed over to the ‘Now Foods’ brand page to look for a skincare oil. I am a huge fan of their Avocado oil (see my Skincare oils haul post). I then found Apricot oil there that sounded really nice. It softens fine lines and helps treat dry hair. It’s a multi purpose product which appealed to me. As a skincare oil, it’s actually more suitable for mature skin but since am all about anti-aging and also since I have dry hair, I decided to go for it.

iHerb

It’s a heavy oil. It leaves an oily sheen on the skin and hair. It smells lightly of apricot when smelt directly from the bottle but if you take a small amount in your hand and smell it, it just has an oily smell, nothing else. Since I don’t mind using a heavy oil on my face at night, I like this oil.

Price : $3.18 (AED 11.68) for a bottle containing 118 ml. Please note it’s current price is $3.81 (AED 13.99).

Lastly, I checked out their ‘Trials’ page to find something sample sized or a full sized product at a discounted price. There I found Desert Essence’s Ultra Hydrating Lip Rescue lip balm.

iHerb

It’s a lovely, non sticky, moisturizing lip balm. It has a beautiful light scent. I love that it contains Shea butter & Rosemary essential oil. Also, Desert Essence is a crueltyfree & vegan brand. Please note that Desert Essence is one of the Brands of the Week right now (until Feb 3rd).

Price : $2.49 (AED 9.15) for a tube containing 4.25 gms. However, since it was featured on the Trials page, I got it for $1.68 (AED 6.17).

Shopping over and my total is $10.38 (AED 38.13). Like how cool is that!. I got 3 awesome products for such a low price ♡.

Shipping

Since I was ‘shopping on a budget’, I chose to opt for the Airmail (by post) option, which cost $4 (AED 14.69) that month. I usually choose the DHL courier option, since that way I get my package right to my doorstep from US to UAE in 2 – 3 days. Even though cheaper or even completely free sometimes, I never chose Airmail before, since it has no tracking and it says on the site that it would take anywhere between 1 – 5 weeks for the package to arrive. By choosing Airmail this time, I could test out whether it reaches safely to UAE and also know how long it takes to reach here. It did reach safely on the 9th day after I placed the order.

Overall, such a lovely experience ‘shopping on a budget’ on iHerb. 😉

Use my code SCZ695 at check out to get $5 off your first purchase.

My Wishlist 2015!

Hiya guys!

I wish I get to own the following in 2015. These are also great things to get your loved ones/friends this Valentine’s day. So this post serves as a Valentine’s Day gift ideas post too!

My top five wishes :

1) A humidifier!

This device increases the moisture level in your flat. Especially in hot climates, like in UAE, this is a huge blessing. When left to work overnight, you will wake up with the most hydrated skin and am all about making my skin feel better!. It also enhances the health of your body, by relieving allergies. Some of them comes with the possibility to add essential oils in it. So, according to your mood, you can set the atmosphere around you to be relaxing, stress relieving, romantic or something else. You will find excellent models in UAE stores such as Home Center and they are priced around AED 180 or so.

2) A subscription to Box Therapy!

Box Therapy is a new subscription box in UAE. There are four types of subscription available – one month, three months, six months and an year. They are priced at AED 162, AED 396, AED 762 and AED 1392 respectively. Each box, each month will contain anything from the following : Fashion, Cosmetics, Fitness related, Electronics, Home décor, Nutrition, Skincare, Haircare, Nailcare or Experiences!. What appeals the most to me is that this is not just a beauty box. It is something more. It is a lifestyle box. I soo want it!. Below are the past two boxes :

3) An electric toothbrush!

I have always wanted one, so that I can keep my smile looking tip top :). I personally would love one from the brand Oral B or Philips Sonicare. Here are the different varieties of Oral B brushes. I believe they are available in pharmacies. I haven’t checked out their prices yet. A quality, durable one must be expensive. But I still want one..

4) A Michael Kors watch!

It’s a huge dream of mine to own an MK watch. I would die seriously if I could get my hands on one of them and call it my own. Some of the MK watches have a masculine feel to it and I love it. I hate those petite feminine watches. They are just too dainty. Call me weird :P. Anyways, here are three of my favorite models :

5) Himalayan Salt lamp/ Natural Tea light holder!

These are so gorgeous to look at and has healing and calming effects. It also makes a great home decor item and a unique kind of gift. I found a medium sized one online, from the brand Ancient Secrets, for as low as $10.72 (AED 39.38). I just might buy one soon.

I hope you enjoyed this post and found some pretty great gift ideas for your loved ones or for yourself!. Have a lovely Valentine’s day!
