ABOUT A MURDER OF MAGPIES

A-Murder-of-Magpies-Cover

Title: A Murder of Magpies

Publication date: October 28, 2014

Publisher: Month9Books, LLC.

Author: Sarah Bromley

Winter in Black Orchard, Wisconsin, is long and dark, and sixteen-year-old Vayda Silver prays the snow will keep the truth and secrecy of the last two years buried. Hiding from the past with her father and twin brother, Vayda knows the rules: never return to the town of her mother’s murder, and never work a Mind Game where someone might see.

No one can know the toll emotions take on Vayda, how emotion becomes energy in her hands, or how she can’t control the destruction she causes. But it’s not long before her powers can no longer be contained. The truth is dangerously close to being exposed, placing Vayda and her family at risk.

Until someone quiets the chaos inside her.

Unwanted. That’s all Ward Ravenscroft has ever been. To cope, he numbs the pain of rejection by denying himself emotions of any kind. Yet Vayda stirs something in him. He can’t explain the hold she has on him–inspiring him with both hope and fear. He claims not to scare easily, except he doesn’t know what her powers can do. Yet.

Just as Vadya and Ward draw closer, she finds the past isn’t so easily buried. And when it follows the Silvers to Black Orchard, it has murder in mind.

My Review

The book cover, simple as it is, has an alluring quality to it, coupled with the interesting title. The solitary bird under the glaring light from the street lamp post, featured on a sepia toned cover with a touch of color only for the title, makes this cover one of the most intriguing book covers I have ever seen. Readers could interpret it in many ways. The font of the title is beautiful. Also, the title is very cleverly formed. It has the word ‘Murder’ in it since there is a murder in the story, but clearly it indicates a group of birds, particularly magpies, which is also a nickname, the protagonist of this story, Vayda goes by!

Vayda Silver is a girl with a lot of power that she herself underestimates. She can read minds, calm people down, feel what others are feeling or even burst overhead lightings when the feelings become too much to handle and the energy rises. Her twin brother, Jonah Silver is the opposite of her. He riles up people and push out his feelings, moving objects by a mere flick of his wrist. He is like fire while Vayda is like ice. Together they are like Ying and Yang, balancing each other. I love their relationship. It is imperfect and that’s why I can relate to it. Their love is unconditional yet they do fight each other at times. Jonah always looks out for Vayda and protects her.

They both, along with their father, Emory Silver are on the run. Their mind games have earned them names like freak, gypsy and witch. So, they keep moving, always looking over their shoulders, afraid they will be recognized by someone from a previous place they have stayed at. Vayda is lonely, scared to commit to someone but that changes when along comes Ward, a damaged boy with a disturbed past of his own, who somehow calms Vayda down and makes her experience peace, which she rarely does otherwise.

The unspoken attraction between Vayda and Ward and then their love story as we move deeper into the story, is very nicely depicted. It’s very sweet. Each chapter is written from either Vayda’s or Ward’s POV. Other important characters in the book are Rain Killian, Vayda’s and Jonah’s godfather, Marty Pifkin and Chloe, who are their classmates and ones who are always looking out to fight Vayda and Jonah and, Sister Tremblay, someone who seemingly exudes hatred towards the Silver family.

Vayda and Jonah’s late mother, Lorna was someone who quite enjoyed the power the mind games gave her over others. But that got her killed. Now, would her family too suffer and perish like her?. You got to read the book to know more!

The author has really created an amazing and powerful world, with her words!. I am in awe of her work. The situations all tie in well. There are certain situations though, which needs a tad more clarity / explanation. That’s the only fault I could find in the book. Otherwise, it’s an engaging read, which will have you craving to read all of it in one go!.

I give this book 4 out of 5, which by Goodreads standards mean, I ‘really liked it’!

About the Author & Illustrator: Subhash & Sujata Kommuru

Subhash and Sujata KommuruSubhash and Sujata Kommuru hail from India. They migrated to the United States along with their memories of childhood and youth. Now that they are parents, just like every immigrant they crave to introduce their child to the culture and values of their upbringing. Yet it is challenging to teach something while you are in the midst of adjusting to a different culture yourself.

Subhash and Sujata both work in different disciplines and have different styles and backgrounds, but it is the upbringing of their son that brings them on the same page. That exact place where they meet is captured and reflected in their stories, where Subhash can express in words, and Sujata can illustrate them beautifully. Where he puts it in black and white, she adds color to it. You get the idea!

These stories are their attempt to share a glimpse of their childhood days with their son. He is their inspiration to write short stories that have meaning to them and provide teaching in some shape or form.

The Buzz About Books 1 & 2

Book 1: “I am 7 years old, and I loved this book because of EJ’s imagination and how it focused on the real meaning of Christmas. The book made me laugh, and I especially liked the part when EJ used the shopping cart to pretend to be a race car driver. She thought her mom’s scarf was a yellow flag, and she stopped just before she crashed into the display of glue bottles. I liked EJ’s character, and I read the book in about 5 days. When we had “Dress Like Your Favorite Book Character Day” at school, I dressed up like EJ Payne. I can’t wait for the second book in this series!” ~ Emily E., Amazon

Book 1: “My 9-year-old foster daughter loved the book! She related well to EJ and her spunky personality and humorous outlook on life and what it hands you. Great lessons for her to learn, as well as entertaining. She read it in a matter of days and even chose reading it over playing Nintendo, which is a huge endorsement! I also enjoyed it and found it a fun and comforting read for this 40-something adult. Great job. We’re really looking forward to Book 2 of EJ’s adventures at camp! Thanks, Annie!” ~ Lfierbaugh, Amazon

Book 2: “Church Camp Chaos is a delightfully funny look into the highly imaginative workings of a tween girl, EJ Payne. The book cleverly uses a combination of diary entries, narration, and hilarious passages peeking into EJ’s daydreams. The story is originally clever and, at times, very poignant. I thoroughly enjoyed this fantastic book and I highly recommend this series to young girls in particular between the ages of 8 and 12 who also love Clementine, Judy Moody, and Ramona Quimby.” ~ Renee @ Mother Daughter Book Reviews

Book 2: “Curly, my 8-year-old bookworm, loved this book. The day it arrived in the mail I let her look through it. By that evening she brought the book to me to thank me and tell me she was finished. She read the entire book in one day and I don’t think she ever put it down! She enjoyed EJ’s adventures and the fun times she had at church camp. She told me the book was “funny.” I appreciated the way the book treated family relationships and showed a loving family who works together and endures different situations together. EJ and her brother don’t always get along but their parents encourage them to be kind and EJ grows to appreciate her brother and even his slightly obnoxious attempts at humor. I enjoyed the life lessons that EJ learned about trust, faith, and friendship and am glad that I can find books for my daughter to read that are humorous and fun while still promoting good values.” ~ 5 Star Review, Lextin Academy, Amazon

The Buzz About the Book

“As an avid reader of all kinds of books, I often find many fantasy books sloppily written, as though the genre is the dumping ground of less talented writers. So imagine my delight and surprise when right at the get-go–from the first page onwards–`WhipEye’ demolished my prejudice and reminded me that every once in a while, you find that shiny needle in the proverbial haystack.” ~ 5 Star Review, Meghan, Amazon

“Attention to detail, best of all fleshed out and well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well illustrated scenes that actually make you feel like you are right there in the story -or at least wish you were – and that’s something I really look for in a good book. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Tali, Amazon

“`Whipeye’ by Geoffrey Saign is a wonderfully written fantasy story that combines elements of fantasy and magic. The author has created a fantastical world that is vividly imagined with magical creatures and strange but colorful characters…What really makes this story engaging are the likeable characters that you can’t help but root for. The story may be about an adventure that involves magic and supernatural elements, but it’s also about friendship and discovering one’s strength when it’s needed the most. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Portia A., Amazon

“Whipeye is a thrilling magical adventure with surprises at every turn, a story that deserves to be read.” ~ Laurisa White Reyes, Editor-in-Chief of Middle Shelf Magazine and author of The Celestine Chronicles series

“Simply put…it’s a creative story that draws you in from the beginning. The twists and turns, the interesting characters and surprises keep you wanting to turn the next page. This walk into a fantasy serves as a nice mini-vacation without having to go anywhere or plan anything. I look forward to the next book. Well done. ” ~ 5 Star Review, Michael S., Amazon

Giveaway and Review: Beyond Belief by Helen Smith!

Hello all!

Welcome to my stop of the Beyond Belief Blog Tour!

beyondbeliefblogtour

Book Summary

beyondbeliefbookcover

When famed psychic Perspicacious Peg predicts a murder will occur at England’s Belief and Beyond conference, her science-minded colleagues recruit twenty-six-year-old budding sleuth Emily Castles to attend the event as a “future crimes investigator.” The suspected victim: celebrated magician Edmund Zenon, who plans to perform a daring stunt at the conference—and is offering fifty thousand pounds to any attendee who can prove that the paranormal exists.

In the seaside town of Torquay, Emily meets a colorful cast of characters: dramatic fortune-teller Madame Nova; kindly Bobby Blue Suit and his three psychic dachshunds; Sarah and Tim Taylor, devastated parents mourning their late son; and religious cult members Hilary, Trina, and the Colonel. Tensions rise as believers in science, the supernatural, and the spiritual clash with one another. But once a body count begins, Emily must excuse herself from the séances and positivity circles, and use old-fashioned detective work to find the killer.

My Review

I love a good mystery. I have mentioned that several times in the past that suspense/crime thrillers is my favorite genre. So when I read the book summary, the mystery part along with some magic thrown into it, captured my attention. What really drew me in was the book cover. It’s one of the most apt book covers I have seen. It’s very much magical!

I have never read a book where even before a crime has occurred, a detective is appointed. That too a future crimes investigator!. I found it funny. I started reading and found that the author has a good sense of humor and she weaves it into almost every chapter, in a very clever manner. There are a lot of characters introduced to us. Some of them are just superfluous but I guess they are named anyway simply to show that a lot of different people are attending this big conference happening in the seaside town of Torquay. The author must have known that it’s too difficult for a reader to keep track of all the characters being introduced to us. So she reminds us, where a character was first introduced throughout the book. It was quite helpful!.

In the beginning, the mood for the big event is set. Though this is a murder mystery, it’s surprisingly casual. The whole attitude and the setting of the novel is very casual. I would have liked it to be a bit more serious when it should be. I found some characters to be outright rude, even when it was uncalled for. The town, the food, everything is beautifully mentioned. In the first 150 pages, actually I thought there might not even be a murder!. That was how the events went on. By then, truthfully, I just wanted the pace to pick up, for something interesting to happen.

And finally it did!. The body count started rising and all of a sudden, it was really interesting. Emily, as the investigator, did a good job. She is very perceptive and quick at putting two and two together. This book is not a hardcore mystery book. However, the mystery is maintained until the very end and you will never guess who the murderer was. So I am impressed.

I give this book a rating of 3 out of 5, which by Goodreads standards mean ‘I liked it’.

Hello everyone,

Welcome to my stop on the book tour of Lights of Aurora by Theresa McClinton!

Book title

Lights Of Aurora, book 2 of The Stone Legacy Series

aurora2-600

Book Blurb

After the discovery of her ancient Maya bloodlines, eighteen-year-old Ashley Coreandero is faced with a daunting responsibility. She must protect the stone of Muuk’Ich while Sarian, the underworld general, relentlessly drives her to the brink of insanity.

As the winter solstice approaches, it brings an onslaught of unexpected side effects. Ashley must seize control over her supercharged powers, while dealing with the overwhelming suspicion that her boyfriend, Arwan, is hiding a secret so dark it could destroy them both.

With the arrival of a surprise houseguest, Ashley’s deepest fears about Arwan are confirmed. And when middleworld deities intercede, the group of gifted Maya descendants are confronted with hardships they never saw coming—including an enemy more deadly than they have ever faced.

Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned—but when that woman has no soul and a taste for revenge, they will need the powers of every surviving ancestor simply to stay alive.

Book Excerpt (from Chapter Six)

The sound of Ashley’s scream tore into him. Arwan clenched his fist as scarlet liquid slid down his forearm and dripped from his elbow onto the stone floor. He pumped his hand to encourage the flow of more blood as he knelt, laying his wound over the altar. His shoulders slumped forward as the offering was collected.

He swore he would never go back to his old life. He made an oath to leave that world behind and fight against every soul that dwelled in the shadows—every force responsible for causing pain. Now he was going to break that promise, for her, and he may lose her in the process.

Ashley’s hands clutched his shoulders. “What did you do?” He hung his head as low as he could, wishing he could disappear completely. His honor had been stripped away. Shame hung like a heavy cloud over his soul, mocking the years he spent hiding the truth. It was all for nothing.

His blood filled the cracks of the aged rock. With his other arm wrapped around Ashley’s waist, he pressed his forehead against her belly as if already begging for forgiveness. But there was no time for that now. He had to hold onto her, or she would be lost in the transport.

A burst of wind tore through the cave. Ashley screamed and grabbed onto him as she fought against the blast. Darkness consumed them, snuffing out any light Ashley produced. The thick fog weighed on Arwan’s chest as he felt the core of his being break free.

Until that moment, he’d managed to keep his darkness under control. Now he felt it claw its way out of its dormant state and flush his veins. His vision blurred. Only the warmth of Ashley’s body kept him grounded. He clenched his jaw, huffing breaths through his nose while they were sent to the gate, where worse terror awaited.

The wind died in an instant and slapped Arwan to the cold stone of the isolated cave—the other side of the portal.

The gate to the underworld.

He tried to push to his feet, but he had no strength left to support his effort. The sound of Ashley’s breaths grew louder until her warm hands cradled his cheeks. He opened his eyes, barely able to see past the pain tearing through his muscles.

She grabbed his hand. “Hold on!” Her voice sounded frantic. Warmth seeped into his wrist from her trembling fingers. His wound knitted together, healed by her touch. She rested her hand over his chest. He relaxed his muscles while the heat from her body poured over him.

The darkness inside of him thrashed through his gut and he curled on the floor. Tightening his fists, he had to do something to offset the effects of being so close to the underworld.

He’d managed to keep from changing all these years by staying near the goodness of Riyata, and far from the powers beneath. But crossing through the portal and near the gate meant he had to control his darker half, and quickly—or risk it emerging from inside him.

Ashley’s heat was gone, leaving him frozen on the ground. The chilled air prickled his skin, making it hard to concentrate. He opened his eyes for a split second, just long enough to see Ashley’s expression turn to horror.

She leapt to her feet, and he listened to her footsteps drag over the ground with each backward step. “What just happened, Arwan?” Her screech bounced off the stone walls. “Your eyes are black. Completely black!”

He struggled to sit, concentrating to keep his focus on caging the force within him. He’d nearly forgotten how powerful it was. But he didn’t want her to be afraid of him, and the hope she would still want him had begun to fade beneath her trembling voice.

It took almost everything he had, but finally he was able to see clearly, and he knew his eyes had returned to normal. For now.

He gathered the courage to meet her gaze. When he did, he wished they had never come to this damned place, and he could be with her the way they were before. Before she knew who he really was.

A long time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa began her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and feature articles to delve into the whimsical world of fiction.

Since then, Theresa has been married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and has been repeatedly guilt tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having traveled to over a dozen countries—not to mention an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. But wherever life brings her, Theresa will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.

Book review : Like a Woman Scorned by Randi Hart

Hi all,

Today I am reviewing a romance-suspense novella by Randi Hart. Let’s first get to know the author!. Here is an intro from the author herself..

Randi

Hi, I’m Randi. I hope you like my books. I live in Southern California with my wonderful husband. We are both retired and travel a lot, especially to the east coast. I like to write while sitting in my backyard and enjoying a glass of wine, or to kill the time when on a plane.

I am a bit of a health nut and go running, paddling, or hit the gym almost every day. I try to eat mostly healthy, and buy a lot of organic groceries. Of course, being healthy doesn’t help much when somebody who is texting on a smart phone while driving runs over you. Lots of people have those touch-screen smart phones these days, don’t they? Come to think of it, maybe I will go out for a burger!

Book Summary

RandibookCover

Girl meets boy – specifically, knockout senior-paralegal girl Alison Carson meets hotshot Boston lawyer boy Rick Waterman while he is visiting Alison’s beloved hometown of San Francisco on a month-long trial. Girl and boy fall in love. Boy eventually goes back home and promises to call. Boy doesn’t call. Girl experiences heartbreak, plus an actual physical malady as a result of the affair.

Girl then finds out about boy’s other girl back home. Girl wants revenge. Girl secretly gets revenge, but goes too far with it. Boy’s life is wrecked. Girl then feels guilty. Boy finally calls girl and apologizes. Boy and girl fall back in love. That is, until boy starts getting suspicious…

My review

I absolutely love how the author has carefully thought of every little detail, while creating this story. This is a very fresh plotline. Woman scorned by a cheating guy is not new but this storyline has so many unexpected twists and turns, you simply wouldn’t be able to put it down once you start!.

The book cover is nice and dark with a splash of red across it. Mmm. Smells of revenge. Wilted roses do speak volumes. Allison, the star of this story reminds me a lot of myself. I mean the initial introduction of her, made me instantly like her so much. She hates smokers, wears almost nil makeup most of the time, loves reading, her favorite genre is crime/mystery and has a skincare routine that she has stuck to for years. Whoa!. That’s a lot of similarities right?. Anyways, moving on, she is a senior paralegal and is very much in control of her life. She meets a really handsome guy, Rick and for a while has a fantastic, romantic time. Then she gets to know that he actually was engaged to a nurse back home, the whole time that he was with her. Even though I read this in the book summary, once I got immersed in the book, I forgot about it and then when I actually came to know of his cheating ways, I was totally in disbelief. Their chemistry was amazing. How could he cheat her??

Then Allison decides it’s time for revenge and then the plot is full of twists and surprises all the way till the end. The author’s way of writing is smooth and keeps you glued to those pages. I also got a sneak peek into the life of a person who has a lot of disposable money with them. She was literally spending millions as if they were nothing!. That kind of life is pretty intriguing. Also, through the words of the author, I was able to see the beauty of San Franciso. It’s beautifully and elaborately painted for you to enjoy. Allison’s friend, Brenda is also described well. There is not one scene or character in here which is superfluous. Though Allison is a paralegal and Rick is a lawyer, the story doesn’t use law related jargon much. I wouldn’t have enjoyed that that much and so am grateful to the author for that!. I finished this in a day because I simply couldn’t put it down.  It’s a 44,000 words story which is 154 pages on a pdf file.

In the end, there is a short scene on how she communicates with God and I felt it to be beautiful. Also, I kept thinking that this story could have only one particular way to end. But the author surprised me again with an excellent ending. If you love a bit of romanticism mixed in with suspense, you will love this book. I give this book 5/5 which by Goodreads standards mean ‘it’s amazing’!.

Book review: Escaping Darkness by Theresa McClinton

Hiya guys!

Today I am reviewing Escaping Darkness, a YA fantasy/paranormal romance book, second one of The Stone Legacies series by Theresa McClinton :). More on the Author:

IMG_4315

A long time enthusiast of things that go bump in the night, Theresa began her writing career as a journalism intern—possibly the least creative writing field out there. After her first semester at a local newspaper, she washed her hands of press releases and feature articles to delve into the whimsical world of young adult and new adult paranormal and contemporary romance.

Since then, Theresa has been married, had three terrific kids, moved to central Ohio, and was repeatedly guilt tripped into adopting a menagerie of animals that are now members of the family. But don’t be fooled by her domesticated appearance. Her greatest love is travel. Having traveled to over a dozen countries and explored dozens of U.S. states—including an extended seven-year stay in Kodiak, Alaska—she is anything but settled down. But wherever life brings her, Theresa will continue to weave tales of adventure and love with the hope her stories will bring joy and inspiration to her readers.

Summary of the book

Tagline: She may have spent years in an asylum, but that didn’t make her crazy–just fearless..

Dropped in Moscow with her friends on an impossible mission against underworld forces, Tara is left to her feelings of overwhelming inadequacy. Her boyfriend is a healer, her best friend is “the Guardian,” and everyone else is a powerhouse of awesome strengths. The only thing she has been able to contribute are her memories, which has left her with nightmares of her time spent at the mercy of the evil Sarian–who everyone has gone to fight.

Alone with her emotions, Tara finds herself falling into a city of depravity and corruption. And amidst all this evil is a young man with an agenda of his own, who leads her down a road that will either prove she is a hero at heart, or drag her into a world she’s always feared.

He wants revenge, she wants redemption. And in an underground rings of missing girls and bloody sacrifices, only the fearless can survive…

My review

I was so excited to finally read the second book in The Stone Legacies series. When reading the first book, The Stone Guardian, I had noticed how Tara (best friend of Ashley, who is the stone guardian), was the odd one out, simply because she had no powers. She was a mere human in the midst of powerful people like time benders, healers, dreamwalkers etc. How does she fit into the plot in the future?. I had wondered. So imagine my delight when Theresa based her entire second book on Tara, making her the star and giving her a proper place in the plot.

Once again, Theresa enthralls with her writing style. Especially in Chapter three, the raw emotions of Tara is so well captured, I just loved it!. Hawa is as ‘bad ass’ as before!. You simply can’t help but wonder what the heck is wrong with this girl??. The feelings in this book are tangible and the way Theresa writes, you feel like you are right in the book and those people are just within your hand’s reach.

In this book, Theresa touches on topics like drugs, child abuse and situations similar to human trafficking. She makes it clear in “A Word from the Author” that she does so, inorder to spread awareness of such grave issues. I felt that was very thoughtful of her.

A new character, Malachi, has been introduced this time around.  He is a very mysterious character and believe me, the more you read, the more you want to know about him. Why does he stalk Tara?. How does he appear out of no where?. Who is he?. Questions like this torment you to go through the pages faster. Theresa gives you details little by little thus keeping you glued to your seat.

In Chapter eight, Theresa introduces a neat twist, one that you never saw coming and surprise the hell out of you!. Towards the end of the book, I was moved to tears. My heart aches for those who had to go through a kidnapping situation and their families.

Even though this is a short novella, with 34,000 words, I would say, Theresa managed to keep it exciting and intriguing, with twists you wouldn’t even imagine!. Overall, I simply loved this book as much as The Stone Guardian, which I had reviewed back in Jan. I can’t wait for the next book, to know more about Ashley!

I give this book 5/5 which by Goodreads standards mean that ‘it was amazing’.
