Book Review : The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith!

Hey guys!

I am super excited to review mystery thriller titled The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith. If you are not aware of it, Robert Galbraith is J.K.Rowling’s pseudonym. It’s her first crime novel!

Book Summary

Cuckoos calling

A brilliant debut mystery in a classic vein: Detective Cormoran Strike investigates a supermodel’s suicide. After losing his leg to a land mine in Afghanistan, Cormoran Strike is barely scraping by as a private investigator. Strike is down to one client, and creditors are calling. He has also just broken up with his longtime girlfriend and is living in his office.

Then John Bristow walks through his door with an amazing story: His sister, the legendary supermodel Lula Landry, known to her friends as the Cuckoo, famously fell to her death a few months earlier. The police ruled it a suicide, but John refuses to believe that. The case plunges Strike into the world of multimillionaire beauties, rock-star boyfriends, and desperate designers, and it introduces him to every variety of pleasure, enticement, seduction, and delusion known to man.

You may think you know detectives, but you’ve never met one quite like Strike. You may think you know about the wealthy and famous, but you’ve never seen them under an investigation like this.

My Review

The book cover is absolutely beautiful!. The color combination along with the retreating figure of the protagonist, Cormoran Strike is stunning. Even before reading the summary, the book cover attracted me to it. Then once I read the summary, I knew I had to have this book..

Cormoran Strike, first of all is a ‘striking’ name. I have never heard a name like that before. He is not your typical protagonist either. Usually it’s cliché that authors create characters who are very attractive and charming. However, Cormoran is very different. He has a lot of flaws and surprisingly that’s exactly what made me like him!. He is a war veteran and has lost a leg. He walks with a limp and now being a private investigator, he is literally running out of money since he has no clients at all. Then, comes along John Bristow, requesting an investigation into the death of his famous sister, supermodel Lula Landry.

The case is such that it’s almost impossible to prove who did the crime. It is three months after the death that the brother finally decided to have someone look into it. The crime scene was no longer fresh with clues. But Cormoran has exceptional ways of looking at situations. He is so amazing. I just love him so much!. Robin Ellacott is in need of a job and it so happens that she is temporarily placed in Cormoran’s office to assist him, by an agency called Temporary Solutions. She has so much initiative and is very smart. Even though Cormoran doesn’t have the money to pay her, and Robin had initially come to the office for a period of a week, she stays on, because she loves investigating and helping Cormoran. There is a beautiful chemistry between the two but never a sexual tension, and I loved that.

Cormoran finally solves the case after a lot of investigating and much help from Robin. You will never, not even in our wildest dreams, guess who the murderer was. His methods will surely capture your attention and make you reluctant to leave the book without having finished it in one sitting, if possible!!. The book has 449 pages. I own a paperback version. This is one crime novel that you MUST not miss!. J.K Rowling yet again proves that she is an exceptional writer. I respect her even more now. The second book with Cormoran Strike in it, is ‘The Silkworm’. I plan to hopefully read it soon.

I give this book 5 out of 5 which by Goodreads standards mean that ‘it was amazing’.

I am exhilarated to also tell you guys that Cormoran Strike’s novels will be adapted for a major new television series for BBC one!. I can’t wait to see who plays the characters of Cormoran Strike and Robin..

Book haul from Jashanmal Bookstore!

Hey guys!

I love book shopping. It’s a beautiful feeling that spreads through your mind & body, spending time in a book store. The feeling is like being in heaven!. It’s been a while since I went book shopping. So yesterday, I visited Jashanmal Bookstore in Mall of Emirates. As in their other stores I have visited, the staff greets you when you enter and are ever so polite, helpful and friendly. I spend about 1.5 hours there going through books. Time well spent!

Here are the five books I bought!

1) Inferno by Dan Brown (Price : AED 99) – This book is talked about soo much these days since it’s release this year. I love Dan Brown. I love Robert Langdon. I have read several books by Dan Brown (The Lost Symbol, Da Vinci Code, Digital Fortress, Angels & Demons etc, all of them nothing short of GENIUS). So when I heard this book was released, I had to have it!. It’s a hardcover version. Books with two different covers were available at the store.

I liked both so much but somehow, the one on the right won!

2) Mistress by James Patterson (Price : AED 70) – I love James Patterson!. You guys know that by now. He is freaking amazing. I recently visited his website and immediately noticed the 15 second video playing right on the homepage, where he talks about his book, Mistress. Fifteen secs can seriously tempt you to buy a book. I learned that from here :P. His words : “Drop dead killer”. That’s where I surrendered to it’s charm!. Anyways, this book is considered “James’s scariest, sexiest thriller in years”. Can’t wait to read it!. I one I got is a paperback version.

Here is the cover highlighted on his site.

But the one I bought has this cover:

mistress 2

3) The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbriath (Price : AED 78) – What you probably don’t know is that this is the first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym, Robert Galbriath. That along with the interesting plot made me purchase this book. It’s a paperback version. J. K Rowling stunned us with the Harry Potter series. I want to see how she does crime novels..

I had my eyes set of The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling. However, while in the store, reading it’s summary again, I didn’t find it as interesting. So didn’t buy that. It has a nice cover though..

4) The Confession by John Grisham (Price : AED 28) – Another crime author whose style of writing I love. In this book, what attracted me the most is that a guy called Travis, murdered someone and stands aside watching when someone else, named Donte, gets arrested for it. Nine years later, Travis is fighting a brain tumour and is facing a dreadful fate of his own. Donte is 4 days away from getting executed after having spent all those 9 years in jail, for a crime he didn’t commit. Travis has a change of mind and decides to confess (thus the title). But how in the world can a guilty man convince lawyers, judges and politicians that they’re about to execute an innocent man?.

Isn’t that an amazing plot?. Travis will have to fight like hell to convince them and that’s what attracted me to this one. I got the paperback version.

confessionInstead of being yellow, like in the picture above, the cover of the book I got is a beautiful golden color!

5) Simple Genius by David Baldacci (Price : AED 30) – David Baldacci is another author who is as good as James Patterson. I love them both soo much. The recent thriller I read of Baldacci is “Hour Game”, which I bought last year. This time, the same characters, Sean King and Michelle return to thrill again in Simple Genius. I love those characters. I love the author. Sure fire winner.. I got the paperback version.

My blog receives two awards!!

Hi guys!

On this fab day with it’s fab date (12/12/12), I wish to share a fab news with you. My blog has received 2 awards, The Liebster award and the Gargie award!!.. Gosh I am so excited!!

Monica from http://gongjumonica.wordpress.com was kind to think my blog worthy enough for these 2 awards. Thanks Monica!!.. You guys got to check out her blog as she is a very sweet person and I love the way she expresses herself through her interesting posts. She always supports me.

More about the first award!

The Liebster award

liebster-copy (1)

What does Liebster mean?.  It is a German word which means sweetest, kindest, nicest, dearest, beloved, lovely, kind, pleasant, valued, cute, endearing, and welcome. This award is given to bloggers who have less than 200 followers and is just starting out in this beautiful field of blogging.

Now that I received the award, the next step is:

  1. Answer the questions that the tagger set for you plus create 11 questions for the people you’ve tagged to answer.
  2. Choose 11 bloggers and link them in your post.
  3. Go to their page and tell them.

Here are my answers to the 11 questions that Monica set for me.

1. What is your favorite book series?

Ans : My favorite book series is the Hercule Poirot series by Agatha Christie. Hercule Poirot is a fabulous detective just like Sherlock Holmes and I definitely love how perceptive and intelligent he is.

2. If you could star in any movie, what would the film and your character be?

Ans : I would love to be in Step Up and be Jenna Dewan!!.. She has such a flexible body, dances her heart out and gets to romance Channing Tatum on screen and in real life too!!.. Who wouldnt love that!… Its lucky my husband doesn’t read my blog posts 😀

3. If you are given one week to live, how will you spend it?

Ans:  I will spend all my money going shopping, gifting people and staying in exotic hotels, which I love!. I then would have amazing spa treatments. Might as well die looking great!.. Hahaha..

4. Blue or Purple?

Definitely purple!. I loved purple from the time my husband first gifted me this purple dress.

5. What’s the most embarrassing thing you have done in school?

Ans: I once did a speech during the Annual Day of the school in front of the all the students and parents. It was a mortifying experience. I felt it to be particularly embarrassing when I messed up the last sentence because deep inside, I was rejoicing that I had reached the last sentence, however, while my thoughts strayed away to my happiness, I forgot the last sentence midway!. Then I just repeated the sentence. Never did speeches ever again!!

6.  If you could write and publish a book, what will it be about?

Ans : To say the truth, I would have eventually written about Harry Potter if J.K Rowling hadn’t beat me to it!

7. Iphone or Android?

Ans: Definitely Android. I own a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 🙂

8. What is your favorite coffee shop and usual order there?

Ans :  Il Cafe Di Roma, Marina Mall, Abu Dhabi is my fav. The one thing I always  order is a chocolaty drink with rich chocolate chips in it, topped with whipped cream. I believe it’s called the Mocha choc. It’s been some time since I been to this cafe. I simply look at the pic and order it!.. Dumb, I know… It looks somewhat like this. The chocolate chips are dropped into it right before serving it and so by the time you have it, the chips would have started melting in the hot drink. Gosh it’s heaven..

espresso cafe mocha

9. If you will be given one chance to change a historical event, what would it be?

Ans : The Jallianwala Bagh massacre which occurred in India back in 1919, where some weirdo along with 50 other armed men blocked the only entrance to a park and fired at all the people in the park leaving more than 1000 people, including women and children, dead. That is atrocity and I wish that never happened.

10. Real books or eBooks?

Ans: No doubt about it.. Real books win here!… The tangible feel of the books and it’s smell is simply too amazing. I get bored soon when I am reading ebooks.

11. What inspires you to write?

Ans:  I love to express my feelings and that inspires me to write. I have always been interested in books, which inspired me to read more and write more.

Alright so all the questions are done.  I should say I had fun answering these questions!. Thanks again Monica 🙂

I now have the power vested in me to pass on these awards to 11 other bloggers, as I mentioned before.  However I have only one person to award this to, as I  do not follow many bloggers who have under 200 followers.  Here is my nominee:
