Book Review : Mistress by James Patterson!

James Patterson is one of my all time favorite authors. I have enjoyed many of his books and this one’s book summary too had me wanting to pick it up immediately!.

Patterson is the creator of the #1 new detective series of the past dozen years, featuring Alex Cross and including the Hollywood-adapted “Along Came a Spider” and “Kiss the Girls,” starring Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman. He is also the creator of the #1 new detective series of the past five years, featuring Lindsay Boxer and the other members of the Women’s Murder Club, from which the ABC television drama series was adapted. He has authored books behind six films on the Hollywood fast-track, including the upcoming Maximum Ride movie forthcoming from Avi Arad, the producer of X-Men and Spiderman.

He is the author of novels—from The Thomas Berryman Number (1976) to Honeymoon (2005)—that have won awards including the Edgar, the BCA Mystery Guild’s Thriller of the Year, the International Thriller of the Year award, and the Reader’s Digest Reader’s Choice Award. And, he has won a Children’s Choice Book Council’s Children’s Choice Awards “Author of the Year” award (2010).

Book Summary

How well can you ever really know someone?

As Ben Casper watches his best friend plummet from her sixth-floor apartment balcony, he realizes his life is about to change. Diana had no reason to kill herself, she had to have been pushed.

Diana worked for the CIA, so the investigation into her death is kept tightly under wraps. But Ben is a political journalist, and can feel that something isn’t right.

Ben starts investigating for himself and soon discovers Diana was leading a double life he knew nothing about. But when more people involved die in questionable circumstances, it’s clear that someone doesn’t want the truth to be uncovered

And unless Ben drops his investigation, he could be next…

My Review

Diana Hotchkiss falls to death from her flat’s balcony, right in front of her best friend Benjamin’s eyes. The more Ben thinks about it, the more he feels it ain’t a suicide. Then Ben goes on a rollercoaster ride to do everything that he can to find out and possibly solve this mystery. He is soon in a world of trouble and danger. The pace of the story is really fast and within the first few chapters, there are many after Ben’s life and the body count starts rising!. It’s exciting, absolutely thrilling and keeps you on the very edge. Ben gets nearly killed in many occasions. However he escapes them all in a believable manner.

The determination of this man is just something else!. You definitely would want a friend like him in your life, one who would do anything for you. With even the US government involved in this scandal, you would think it’s impossible for Ben to go forward. But he fights against all odds. The scandal he gets involved in gets bigger by each chapter. You got to read the book to know the rest. All I can say in a cryptic manner is that what happens with Diana Hotchkiss is quite disappointing. But did she deserve it?. I guess yes!. No spoilers here. This is definitely an awesome thriller!.

I give it 5 out of 5, which by Goodreads standards means ‘it was amazing’!

Book haul from Jashanmal Bookstore!

Hey guys!

I love book shopping. It’s a beautiful feeling that spreads through your mind & body, spending time in a book store. The feeling is like being in heaven!. It’s been a while since I went book shopping. So yesterday, I visited Jashanmal Bookstore in Mall of Emirates. As in their other stores I have visited, the staff greets you when you enter and are ever so polite, helpful and friendly. I spend about 1.5 hours there going through books. Time well spent!

Here are the five books I bought!

1) Inferno by Dan Brown (Price : AED 99) – This book is talked about soo much these days since it’s release this year. I love Dan Brown. I love Robert Langdon. I have read several books by Dan Brown (The Lost Symbol, Da Vinci Code, Digital Fortress, Angels & Demons etc, all of them nothing short of GENIUS). So when I heard this book was released, I had to have it!. It’s a hardcover version. Books with two different covers were available at the store.

I liked both so much but somehow, the one on the right won!

2) Mistress by James Patterson (Price : AED 70) – I love James Patterson!. You guys know that by now. He is freaking amazing. I recently visited his website and immediately noticed the 15 second video playing right on the homepage, where he talks about his book, Mistress. Fifteen secs can seriously tempt you to buy a book. I learned that from here :P. His words : “Drop dead killer”. That’s where I surrendered to it’s charm!. Anyways, this book is considered “James’s scariest, sexiest thriller in years”. Can’t wait to read it!. I one I got is a paperback version.

Here is the cover highlighted on his site.

But the one I bought has this cover:

mistress 2

3) The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbriath (Price : AED 78) – What you probably don’t know is that this is the first crime novel by J.K. Rowling, writing under the pseudonym, Robert Galbriath. That along with the interesting plot made me purchase this book. It’s a paperback version. J. K Rowling stunned us with the Harry Potter series. I want to see how she does crime novels..

I had my eyes set of The Casual Vacancy by J. K. Rowling. However, while in the store, reading it’s summary again, I didn’t find it as interesting. So didn’t buy that. It has a nice cover though..

4) The Confession by John Grisham (Price : AED 28) – Another crime author whose style of writing I love. In this book, what attracted me the most is that a guy called Travis, murdered someone and stands aside watching when someone else, named Donte, gets arrested for it. Nine years later, Travis is fighting a brain tumour and is facing a dreadful fate of his own. Donte is 4 days away from getting executed after having spent all those 9 years in jail, for a crime he didn’t commit. Travis has a change of mind and decides to confess (thus the title). But how in the world can a guilty man convince lawyers, judges and politicians that they’re about to execute an innocent man?.

Isn’t that an amazing plot?. Travis will have to fight like hell to convince them and that’s what attracted me to this one. I got the paperback version.

confessionInstead of being yellow, like in the picture above, the cover of the book I got is a beautiful golden color!

5) Simple Genius by David Baldacci (Price : AED 30) – David Baldacci is another author who is as good as James Patterson. I love them both soo much. The recent thriller I read of Baldacci is “Hour Game”, which I bought last year. This time, the same characters, Sean King and Michelle return to thrill again in Simple Genius. I love those characters. I love the author. Sure fire winner.. I got the paperback version.

Grand book fair 2012!

Hi my lovely followers 🙂

On Nov 21st, I found out about this amazing book fair called the Grand book fair, from my best friend. I decided to head there on the first day itself and find out more about it myself, before letting you guys in on it 🙂

Oh by the way, am a self-confessed bookworm. I absolutely LOVE books. I do try to attend book fairs a lot as the rates are way too good then!. The Grand book fair started on Nov 22nd and will go on until 1st Dec. I highly recommend you go there. Some of the books are priced at seriously unbeatable prices..

They have an amazing array of books. Prices start at AED 1, as advertised. Those are mainly books for children. Then there are books for AED 2, AED 5, AED 7, AED 10, AED 20 and so on. As it was the first day, the salespeople were still spending time putting the price stickers on the books. I found an amazing book in the AED 5 section and then found an AED 20 sticker on it. I clarified with the staff and he said, it is indeed AED 5. So tip number 1 : Don’t trust the sticker!. Go with the general pricing in that area or clarify with the staff. I did find many books with AED 40+ prices on it. As I was not planning on buying them, I didn’t try to find out the correct price.

I spend an hour there. I do have a list of “Want – to – read” books. I did find books by those authors but not the titles I wanted. That was a pretty sad scenario. I asked for a particular book to one of the staff and he basically rummaged through the same pile of books I been going through and finally said that those are the only titles available from that author. So tip number 2: What you see, is what you get!. Take time, go through all areas and just try to find what you want.

My favorite authors are James Patterson, David Baldacci, Cecelia Ahern, Danielle Steel, John Grisham among others. So I concentrated on those. There are many other well known authors featured. Also, just because everything is priced at amazing rates, I am not one who simply would go on a frenzy, buying everything that my sight falls on. I am very much in control even when I am surrounded by things that I lust for, like books!. So I bought only 3 books. Can you imagine the kind of control I have to have bought only that many!.. Hahaha 😀

Here are the books I bought :

  1. Along came a spider by James Patterson – Paperback version – 435 pages
  2. Black Market by James Patterson – Paperback version – 400 pages
  3. Hour game by David Baldacci – Paperback version – 721 pages

Now for the price!… I got all of the above for AED 5 each. Oh boy!.. Isn’t that a steal??… I have seen each of these books priced at AED 45+ at other bookstores. If you are more interested in hardcover versions, there are some available (of certain titles only, not all) for AED 10.

There are many different areas, which cover different topics. Fiction, Children’s books, Health and Fitness, Islamic culture, various kinds of dictionaries etc. The staff are keen to help, with the pricing inquiries. So that is a plus point. Probably because its the very first day, there were only a few customers there. ImageImage

Here is a photo from the outside. Forgive the lighting. It was pretty dark out there.

Here is a map to get there.

I hope you do visit this book fair. Comment below and let me know whether you bought any books or your thoughts on this post and generally on book fairs 🙂
