It was my husband’s birthday on the 21st and my family came over to celebrate it together. They brought a gorgeous cake too :). It was the Praline Berry Splendor ice cream cake from Baskin Robbins. Yum!

I became extremely happy when a friend of mine who doesn’t follow a skincare routine, decided to get all the basics to start a routine, after reading my skincare basics post. It’s so delightful to be able to inspire someone to take action! She shared a picture of the products she got and I am so thankful to her for sending it my way:

Book Review : Night Chill by Jeff Gunhus!

Hello!

Today’s review is about a horror thriller, Night Chill by Jeff Gunhus. Let’s first get to know the author!.

jeff

Jeff Gunhus is the author of the Middle Grade/YA series The Templar Chronicles. The first book, Jack Templar Monster Hunter, was written in an effort to get his reluctant reader eleven-year old son excited about reading. It worked and a new series was born. Jeff is also the co-CEO of a national company with over 4,000 employees that has been featured in national media for its unique opportunity for college students to learn entrepreneurial skills.

He is the author of the motivational career guides No Parachute Required (Hyperion) and Wake Up Call (Seven Guns Press). After his experience with his son, he is passionate about helping parents reach young reluctant readers and is active in child literacy issues. As a father of five, he leads an active lifestyle in Maryland by trying to constantly keep up with his kids. In rare moments of quiet, he can be found in the back of the CIty Dock Cafe in Annapolis working on his next novel.

Book Summary

night chill

From the author of Jack Templar Monster Hunter comes a supernatural thriller for adult audiences. Jack Tremont moves his family to the quiet mountains of Western Maryland hoping to leave behind a troubled past and restart his life. Instead, he finds himself caught up in a nightmare when his daughter Sarah is targeted by Nate Huckley, a mysterious and horrifying stranger driven by a dark power that will stop at nothing to possess Sarah.

When Sarah goes missing, suspicion falls on Jack and he must uncover the secrets of the small mountain town of Prescott City and face the evil secret hidden there. As he digs further, he learns the conspiracy reaches more deeply than he could have imagined. Finally, he will have to face the question, What is a father willing to do to save his child? The answer? Anything. Anything at all.

My review

The book cover is creepy and instantly drew my attention to it. It features a girl with a stuffed teddy bear in her hand. Seeing this plus the creepy title, I assumed this would be a story about some kind of haunting involving a child ghost. Child ghosts creep me out the most since children are so innocent but showing them as dangerous is creepy in itself!. So, I decided to read this but was a bit disappointed because that scene shown on the cover is not even a part of the story.

From the summary, I knew Nate Huckley was the villain character. So, I was quite surprised to see him featured in the first chapter itself. But for that same reason, the book started out interestingly. You get to see how the maniac’s mind works. The encounter the Tremont family has with Nate Huckley at the rest area, is absolutely chilling, to say the least. It’s written very nicely. It’s creepy enough to give you goosebumps. I feel like Nate is fear personified.

Sarah seems to be special from beginning. She is little but shows psychic abilities. I thought it would be explained as to why she is so but it is not. Jack is an amazing father and is willing to do anything even kill to protect his family. Different chapters are written from different character’s POV and I really liked it. The author has written in such a way that every page is thrilling and you cannot simply put it down!. You have no idea what comes next. Some people in Prescott City, where this family is based in, are hiding something. You will never know which character is bad or which character can be trusted!.. There is a conspiracy going on and you got to read this book to know it!. I really like the character called Joe Lonetree who is mysterious and intriguing.

There are some really witty remarks here and there that were really funny!. In situations where the character should be serious, the author has maintained that level perfectly unlike some authors who tend to write jestingly even in serious situations, that can be plain annoying. I have got to say that there were some inconsistencies in the story, editing errors maybe.

If you are interested in stories that are/relating to supernatural, creepy, mind control, ancient civilizations, spelunking, then this book is for you!.

I give this book a rating of 4 out of 5, which by Goodreads standards mean that I ‘really liked it’.
