Stressed out? Don’t make overeating a habit!

April is Emotional Overeating Awareness Month
Right Bite shares tips on healthy ways to cope with emotional overeating

Living in a big city has a lot of advantages. There is nothing that can compare to the energy, vibrancy and convenience a highly-urbanized area like Dubai can offer. But, like all the other realities in life, there are also challenges that come with big city living – most would agree, the hustle and bustle of urban dwelling is incredibly stressful.

People have a variety of coping strategies in order to deal with stress. Unfortunately, there are more who have unhealthy reactions to stress, most common of which is turning to food for anxiety relief and comfort. Using food to cope with emotions can lead to overeating, and in turn, result in higher obesity rates and increasing health problems.

April is Emotional Overeating Awareness Month and Right Bite, the proven expert in nutritional consultation and the pioneer in healthy meal delivery service, is echoing the call to increase public awareness on the consequences of engaging in such unhealthy behaviour.

Zeina Soueidan, Clinical Dietitian for The Right Bite Nutrition Centre, said, “Emotional overeating is when you turn to food to fill an emotional void and get instant gratification. Food becomes your solution for coping with stress, anger, anxiety or sadness.  You end up adding extra calories to your daily diet and end up gaining weight thus hindering any progress in maintaining health, while you enter a vicious circle of over indulgence and guilt.”

As Dubai’s stress levels are on the increase and obesity rates continue to rise, it is important to recognise the concerns posed by emotional overeating among residents. Following are top five tips from Right Bite on how to manage emotional overeating and get yourself in control of your health:

● Acknowledge your emotion and accept the fact that having low and sad moments are normal and it’s alright to feel them without seeking immediate gratification. Once you do so, then you avoid turning to something you don’t need to instantly alleviate your mood.

● Know your triggers. Keeping a diary and jotting down your mood as you are eating can help identify the number of times you eat when in a bad mood, the challenging times you have, and which foods create a weakness. This will allow you to understand your habits and prepare solutions.

● Distract yourself. If there is a weakness towards a particular food item, make sure not to have it at arm’s length.  Instead keep healthy food items at a visible level in your pantry. If boredom is the reason, then find ways to entertain yourself other than eating.

● Keep your hunger satisfied. If you practice eating five small meals in a day, then you balance your blood sugars and hormones, keeping you away from craving that serotonin surge. Include whole grains, healthy fats and good sources of protein in a balanced way. This will get you more in control of your mood, as well as the amount and type of food you consume.

● Allow yourself to enjoy the food. When you find yourself unable to fight off the temptation, lengthen the process of eating. Take your time, set up the table with full place setting, chew it well and allow yourself to enjoy it in controlled portions.  Then clean up and leave the room immediately, and move on to other tasks. This will calm you down and lessen your craving for it when the next mood swing comes around.

Review : October 2014 Glambox!

Hey guys!

I am back from my vacation. What awaited me here was October’s Glambox which is one of my favorite boxes to date!. It contains some really great brands.

1) Caudalie Divine oil : This is my favorite product this month!. This multi purpose oil can be used on your hair, face or body. It smells absolutely divine and lingers on the skin pleasantly for a long time. It is a luxurious blend of Grape oil, Hibiscus oil, Sesame oil and extra virgin Argan oil. It feels rich and indulgent when applied on the skin. It’s a dry oil and thus gets absorbed super fast into your skin. It makes the skin incredibly soft and leaves it glowing. It’s consistency is not too thick nor liquid. What a gem of a product ♥. This is a 15 ml deluxe sized product. I am so glad I received this. Some others would have received Caudalie’s Vinosource SOS Thirst quenching serum in their boxes, instead of this oil. The price of the full sized product (100 ml) of this oil is AED 164.

2) MaXfactor 2000 Calorie Dramatic volume mascara : Yet another MaXfactor mascara!. Wow!. I quite love this one’s packaging and formula. The tube is perfect to be held when applying. It really does volumize your lashes. This mascara is the Best Mascara award winner in the Viva Beauty Awards 2014!. This full sized product is priced at AED39.

3) Calvin Klein pouch with a 1.2ml sample of their latest perfume, Reveal : The pouch is a light pink and silver one, which is super cute. Reveal, has a woody floral smell. It’s nice though it’s not exactly the kind of scent I like to use usually. However, I can easily see it being other people’s favorite. A full size bottle (100 ml) of Reveal costs AED480.

4) OPI nail polish, named First Date at the Golden Gate : This is a classic red nail polish. It’s gorgeous. However, since I don’t wear nail polishes, I will probably feature it in an upcoming giveaway. This full sized product costs AED 49.

There are so many vouchers in this box. Here they are :

1) 15% Discount card to Lens.ae

2) Complimentary luxury wash and blow dry from Marquee salon

3) AED 80 coupon to www.AlwaysHappyInTheSun.com, an online beachwear destination

4) 15% discount voucher on Right Bite Full Package

5) 40% discount voucher to www.nutridiet.ae

Overall, Glambox has outdone themselves this time. Amazing box!.
