How the Right Vitamins can boost your health!

Our bodies rely on certain vitamins and minerals to keep going. Without them, we are sure to experience symptoms of fatigue, problems with digestion, as well as be more vulnerable to falling victim to nasty colds or the flu. The question is, which vitamins and minerals should you focus on replenishing, and why?

Vitamin B-12

B vitamins are essential in helping your body break down foods and boost energy. If you lack these, you are likely to feel lethargic and unmotivated. Many people who experience a lot of stress will require more vitamin B than the average person who lives a relatively low-stress existence. Vitamin B-12 is undoubtedly one of the most important B vitamins there is. It is responsible for replenishing the body’s blood and nerve cells, as well as for making DNA. You can find it in a wide variety of natural food sources, and it is especially high in meat.

Vegans and vegetarians can, therefore, become deficient in Vitamin B-12 quite easily and may be required to take a supplement. However, certain plant milks, soy products and breakfast cereals can help with B-12.

Vitamin C

As most are aware, a good amount of Vitamin C is the backbone of a healthy, well-functioning immune system. It is recommended that adults consume 90 – 2000mg a day in order to reap the maximum benefits of this potent vitamin. It is present in a number of different foods, most of which are acidic in nature, such as tomatoes and citrus fruits.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is generated naturally through sun exposure, so people who reside in areas that see a lot of snow or rainfall can become deficient in it relatively quickly. This is a dangerous thing because vitamin D is necessary for the body to properly absorb calcium for healthy bones. Signs of a vitamin D deficiency include aching joints, back pain, getting sick often, and hair loss. The good news is that if you are unable to get at least 15 minutes of sunshine on a daily basis, you can strive to eat more foods that are rich in vitamin D. These foods include egg yolks, fortified cereals, and fatty fish.

Zinc

Older adults and those who lead stressful lifestyles are more likely to be lacking in zinc, a mineral that is responsible for a healthy immune system and effective wound healing. When you have enough of it in your system, you are likely to remain healthy throughout the seasons, only falling ill on very rare occasions. Furthermore, if you sustain a wound or an injury, you are sure to bounce back faster. Zinc can be found in foods like oysters, pumpkin seeds, and beef.

Consider IV therapy

If ever you feel that you lack any of these vitamins or minerals, you can give yourself a boost with IV therapy. Companies like Reset IV Los Angeles specialize in sending a nurse straight to your door to administer the therapy. Plus, you can top up your IV bag with a range of essentials, including a multivitamin boost, biotin, and BCAA, to name a few. For some people, they are deficient due to genetics.

Here’s to a wealth of valuable vitamins and better health as a result. Be sure to look after yourself, especially in seasons where viruses are rampant.

iHerb Haul #6 – Vitamins!

Hey guys!

Here is another iHerb haul!. iHerb is my favorite online shopping site. It’s US based but ships worldwide ultra fast and offers great deals!. This time, I bought some vitamins for my mom and myself. I did this shopping on Dec 31st, 2014. Here they are:

IMG_1616

1) Natrol Menopause Formula – My mom is 49. She hadn’t hit menopause but had to have her uterus removed a few years back due to some complications and that brought about menopausal symptoms. The worst of it is hot flashes. She would have it many times during the day and even when the A/C is on!. Also, even simple actions like getting ready to go out would make her sweat really badly. She was so tired of it. She saw the doctors about it but nothing really helped. Some said she would overcome it and also gave her some hormonal medicines. But, she didn’t see results and asked me to look into supplements that might help. That’s when I read about menopausal support formula and decided to give this one a try. This Natrol one is hormone free and also supports bone health.

menosel Trust me you guys, her hot flashes became significantly and noticeably less after taking these for just 2 weeks!. She takes 2 tablets in a day. She highly recommends anyone having these symptoms, to take these. It’s a huge relief and I myself am so happy to see that I helped!

Price : $9.08 (AED 33.35) for a bottle containing 60 capsules (which lasts for a month). I bought 4 bottles.

2) Evening Primrose oil capsules by Solgar – Solgar is a really known brand when it comes to dietary supplements and vitamins. Evening Primrose oil has several benefits. It helps with achieving the best for your skin, since it has essential fatty acids that help in keeping the skin youthful and also is generally great for women (for PMS, breast pain etc). It great for nourishing your hair and nails too. I bought this for my mom because these capsules also help alleviate menopausal discomforts. When taken along with the Menopause formula, it helps immensely. She takes just 1 tablet a day.

primrose The capsules came in a glass bottle. Inorder to avoid any damage, this bottle was specially bubble wrapped. I love how iHerb really takes care to pack everything well. These capsules are pretty huge and contains 1300mg per capsule. This brand sells premium, cold pressed, gluten free primrose oil and that’s why I chose this brand.

Price : $11.52 (AED 42.31) for a bottle containing 60 softgels (which lasts for 2 months). I bought 2 bottles.

3) High Potency Vitamin D3 softgels by Rexall Sundown Naturals – I bought this for myself. Vitamin D is great for bone health and for immune support. I spend a lot of time indoors and don’t really expose myself to the sunlight, which is a natural source of Vitamin D. Even though now I might not feel it’s effects, later on in life, my bone health would suffer. I like to take precaution and like to take one capsule of this per day.

vitamind Each capsule contains 1000IU and is tiny in size. This bottle will last me a LONG time!.

Price : $11.23 (AED 41.25) for a bottle containing 400 softgels (which will last an year and more!).

4) L- Carnitine by Now Foods – L-Carnitine naturally exists in your body. But I do like to take these tablets. Some of the main things that these tablets do are : give anti-aging benefits for the skin, firm the skin, increase energy levels (Athletes take these tablets) and also help in burning fat in the body (particularly visceral belly fat).

lcarnitine

The capsule is white and each one contains 500mg. I take one tablet daily.

Price : $16.56 (AED 60.83) for a bottle containing 60 capsules (which will last 2 months).

I actually didn’t have a plan of buying these L-Carnitine tablets. I already have a bottle of it that I am currently using and a back up, from the brand Puritan’s Pride, which I bought from a local pharmacy here in UAE. It was the price of this bottle that made me buy it. As you can see, the Now Foods bottle with 60 capsules in it, costs roughly AED 60.83. But in UAE, vitamins are priced much higher. Below are the bottles that I currently own. Each contains 60 tablets and has the same ingredients and all that but costs AED 145 per bottle!

This one is also white in color and contains 500mg per tablet.

Anyways, that’s my iherb haul!. Hope you enjoyed reading. Disclaimer : I personally research vitamins online and buy it if I like what I see. I just seem to know what’s worth trying and what’s not. Even my husband doesn’t really like the fact that I buy random vitamins for myself. But I do that and I have been doing that for years. For your safety, please research well and I would recommend you take vitamins after having consulted a doctor.

Discounts Received

During December 2014, iHerb had a 50% off on International shipping. Also, I got 5% off my entire order since it was over $40. That came to $5.22 (AED 19.17). Also, iHerb had included a cute notepad and pencil in my package 🙂

note

Shipping

The shipping cost was $10.37 (AED 38.09) after the 50% discount. I had placed the order on Dec 31st. Since it was the new year’s day the next day, there was a note on the check out page that a delay should be expected and that my package will be shipped by Jan 4th. I didn’t mind waiting at all. However, on Jan 2nd itself I received an email saying it was shipped and less than 48 hours, it was on my doorstep, delivered by DHL!.

I can’t stress this enough, iHerb is one of the BEST websites I have ever come across in my life. I highly recommend it.

Vitamins that I love!

Wazzup, wonderful people!

You guys know what kind of poor diet most of the people have these days. What with amazing, yet calorie laden food easily available, it’s not anyone’s fault that green leafy vegetables and fruits become ‘unattractive’!. So, I would say, vitamin supplements are a must for everyone. Following are the vitamins I take and highly recommend to you too. Before going ahead, please bare in mind that if you take any kind of medicines, it’s always great to consult with your doctor before adding supplements to your daily routine.

1) Omega 3 Cod Liver Oil

I take this for overall health. Fish oils are amazing. I am not much of a fish lover, particularly not of sardines, which is a good source of Omega 3 oil. These tablets are an excellent source of Vitamins A & D and help in maintenance of good skin, eyesight and ensure healthy immune system.

The one that I use is Omega 3 Norwegian Cod Liver Oil tablets from Natural Wealth.

20130519_143821

A bottle, costing AED 35, contains 100 tablets, which is good for a little more than 3 months because the recommended prescription is 1 tablet per day. The tablets are oval and golden in color, with a distinct smell which I cant really put my finger on. Pretty weird smell, but I wouldnt consider it bad.

20130519_145731

If you have never taken these before, lemme warn you not to ever bite this tablet. The gel inside has a pungent fishy smell, that you wont be able to stand!

2) Biotin

I take this mainly to promote hair growth. I have discussed earlier on this blog about my damaged hair and such. From the haircare DIYs that I do, you probably already know that I am trying my best to restore health and vitality to my crowning glory!. So when I came across Biotin and knew more about it, I knew I had to have it.

Biotin is a water soluble B complex vitamin also known as Vitamin H. It helps in cell regeneration, promoting nail and hair health and preventing hairloss. It is available at any pharmacy in varying concentration. I decided to start with Hair, Skin & Nails tablets from Nature’s Bounty at first.

20130519_143602

Along with Biotin, these tablets contains other vitamins too like A, C, D, E (well, pretty much every alphabet out there!), Calcium, Collagen, Iron etc. The biotin level is the highest though being 3000mcg per serving size, which is 3 tablets. Though it says to take 3 tablets, I took only 1 per day. Let’s do the math, shall we?. So one tablet gave me 1000mcg per day. I think that’s a very decent amount to start with. The tablet has a very pungent smell like yogurt that’s gone bad!. It has a light green color with brownish spots. They are pretty large in size and each bottle, costing AED 80, contains 60 tablets, good for 2 months.

20130519_143738

Within 2 weeks of taking it, I noticed tiny hair sprouting up along the border of my forehead and at the back of my neck. Then it started growing longer over the weeks. The result was very much noticeable in my case. I loved it totally!. Doing haircare DIYs at the same time, really helped along the hair growth I should say. You have to make sure you drink a lot of water too. I mean, if you just have the tablet, do nothing else and wait around for results, it might take a looong time!

When those tablets were over, I went back to the pharmacy but unfortunately Nature’s Bounty was out of stock. So I went for another brand. This time, I chose Biotin 600 from GNC.

20130519_145807

It contains 600mcg of Biotin and no other vitamins. It’s ok. The tablets are small, oval sized white ones, with no smell.

20130519_145846

Each bottle, costing AED 65, contains 120 tablets, good for 4 months. Once this is over I will go back to Nature’s Bounty, because it gave me the best first impression. I would highly recommend Nature’s Bounty over GNC, as it contains other key vitamins too.

Though there are many different levels of Biotin available in the market, I wouldn’t suggest taking more than 5000mcg per day. Our body does not require a LOT of biotin. Moderate amounts like 1000mcg will do the trick. So why take a large amount like say 10000mcg?

3) B Complex

I take these tablets only when I occasionally get mouth ulcer. If you have got mouth ulcer before, you will know how bothersome it is. So if I wake up one not-so-fine day and find an ulcer, I immediately pop one of these tablets and until it’s gone I take it once per day. While we are on that subject, let me tell you that when you get an ulcer and you don’t treat it immediately, there are chances that there will be swelling on that side of the face, along the jawline. Don’t worry. Just take this tablet and the swelling will go down.

The one that I use is Complete B from Puritan’s Pride.

20130519_150109

Each bottle, costing AED 25, contains 30 tablets. They are yellow colored, long and has a sick smell 😛

20130519_150130

All tablets were purchased from Bin Sina Pharmacy, which has a number of branches all over UAE.

So that’s it for now, guys!. Everything mentioned above is based on my experience. You gotta understand that everything works differently for different people :). Do you take any vitamin supplements?. Let me know in the comments..

Love,
Naz =)
